BMC Cancer 2009, 9:15doi:10.1186/1471-2407-9-15

Published: 13 January 2009

Abstract (provisional)
Background
Consumption of cured /smoked meat and fish leads to the formation of
carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds in the acidic stomach. This study
investigated whether consumed cured/smoked meat and fish, the major
dietary resource for exposure to nitrites and nitrosamines, is
associated with childhood acute leukemia.

Methods
A population-based case-control study of Han Chinese between 2 and 20
years old was conducted in southern Taiwan. 145 acute leukemia cases
and 370 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited between 1997 and
2005. Dietary data were obtained from a questionnaire. Multiple
logistic regression models were used in data analyses.

Results
Consumption of cured /smoked meat and fish more than once a week was
associated with an increased risk of acute leukemia (OR=1.74; 95% CI:
1.15-2.64). Conversely, higher intake of vegetables (OR=0.55; 95% CI:
0.37-0.83) and bean-curd (OR=0.55; 95% CI: 0.34-0.89) was associated
with a reduced risk. No statistically significant association was
observed between leukemia risk and the consumption of pickled
vegetables, fruits, and tea.

Conclusion
Dietary exposure to cured /smoked meat and fish may be associated with
leukemia risk through their contents of nitrites and nitrosamines
among children and adolescents, and intake of vegetables and bean-curd
foods may be protective.

That's a very good statement, Tom,although it dismays me a little.
I have a pair of kippers from the Achiltibuie smokery north of Ullapool.
Can't throw them out , and of course there's the haggis on Saturday night
(Burns Night).
After that, well I promise.

LOL.  You're really too much sometimes.
I now take ownership of this thread, and all other threads related to
leukemia, and hereby command Rusty Tom to stay off these threads.
THEY'RE MINE, RUSTY!  STAY OFF MY THREADS!  IN FACT, STAY OFF MY

Rusty Tom, you're violating the sanctity of Usenet thread ownership.
I told you quite clearly to stay off my threads, and I quite clearly
took ownership of this thread and all others related to leukemia.  Now
STAY OFF!  I have never laughed at children having dread diseases, but
for whatever reason laugh heartily at *your* mental disease.  That
probably means that I'm really not a very nice or good person (gosh,
who'd have guessed?), or I would instead pity you.  Oh well, I still
get to keep all my nice toys, and don't have to sit in the corner, so
I guess my sin isn't *too* serious.  BTW, you really should lean the
proper use of ellipsis, as well as the futility of trying to mask your
crude upbringing by abbreviating vulgarities.  No more response from
you is necessary here.  In fact, you may feel free to abstain from asc
entirely, knowing that you have told us everything you know.

By your logic, you must be a child with leukemia, or you wouldn't post
on this thread.  That means even more meds for you.

You certainly are a vindictive, vicious, evil candidate for the
Antichrist.  Your lord Satan should help you with your posting more;
as it is, you just look more insane by the hour.  FWIW, I've been told
(by an oncologist) that I *don't* have cancer.  I've posted that
before, but you must have missed it.  No doctor has told me I'm going
to die, although I know it to be part of the human condition.

He's been at this for years, such that long-time posters in other health
support groups munge all references to "iron" and "ferrous" to avoid
attracting his attention.

I was well aware of his mission-posting zeal, having been an
on-and-off svbscriber to sci.med.cardiology, but he was pretty much
ignored in that particular pond.  Of course the big fish over there
has been Dr. Andrew B. Chung.  I ignored him pretty much as a rule.

I wasn't aware of his "Thread Ownership" pathology until today though.

Back in 2002, it was alleged that someone died using his "techniques":

I think that's something he started just a couple of years ago. I don't
remember it being a tactic in his earliest posts to ast.
