Tastebuds died today :(

Well, today was an odd one.

Woke up feeling quite well: Slept most of yesterday and all night last
night. Made my coffee and sat outside with a coffee and a smoke. (Sigh.
Yes, I smoke. No, my cancer is not related to it. Yes, I've had the speach
from everyone and their dog about how bad it is. Yes, I am aware of
quitting aids. Yes, I've tried several. Yes, I'm going to try the Champix
when the radiation is done).

So I catch up on the news online and head down for my 2nd cup of coffee
when the sudden urge for scrambled eggs hits me. So I whip em up and add
some pepper and dried red pepper flakes to it, fry it up and put it on the
plate.

Took a bite and thought "Yeesh, this is a little plain" - Grabbed the
ketchup and slathered it all over; Helped a *little* bit, but still really
bland. Ah well, I'm not excactly a cordon bleu chef, so I figure I screwed
it up.

A couple of hours later, I decide I'm hungry for lunch: I make myself a
couple of my favourite sandwiches in the world (Well, next to egg salad):
White bread, black forest ham, mayonnaise (Helmann's, of course), pepper
and dill weed (Dill weed is THE spice. It's mana from heaven, honest!) -
Bring it upstairs and open my gaming news bookmarks and take a big bite.

Bleah.

Cardboard. Wet, ash-like, textureless cardboard. Both sandwiches. Sigh.
Heat up the lasagna later this evening that a neighbour was so kind to
bring over: I could taste a hint of meat and tomato, but really, it was
mushy cardboard.

Now even my flavoured coffee (Irish cream) is starting to taste watery.

This sucks.

Whine/rant over. Thanks :)

"This sucks."

Hi Marc,

It does suck. I have experienced the same "suckness," and, to some extent,
still do.

I just wanted to say hello, and tell you how much I've enjoyed (yes, even at
a time like this) reading your posts to the group. I sense you have a very
strong life-affirming attitude in this, as well as sense of humor, and
talent as a writer. The support from your community you describe is very
touching.

I'd say "welcome to the fellowship of the tasteless" except that sounds like
the epitome of tastelessness itself !  Hopefully you will leave the
fellowship of the tasteless asap. And congratulations on being able to keep
your teeth !

In my case (tongue cancer), my taste didn't just "take a holiday," it got
perverted by diabolical forces so that everything, even distilled water,
tasted like it was oily and salty. This persisted for about two months after
final radiation, and I believe was more related to the chemo than the
radiation. Hope you do not experience this ! And since it sounds like the
radiation you are receiving is much less in the oral cavity arena, it seems
reasonable to hope you will not experience major loss of taste. Has your
doctor, or medical team, given you any prognosis about side-effects in the
area of taste ?  I got none, which, in hindsight, I actually appreciate.

My taste has not come back after almost a year after treatment, and I remain
hyper-sensitive to anything spicy, salty, sour. But "sweet" is back ! And my
great joy is taking fresh green caradamom seeds imported from India (green
cardamom makes all other cardamom seem wimpy) with a little star anise
cluster, crushing both in mortar and pestle, and brewing soy milk with
coffee with the crushed spices, then adding the rare honey of the kapok tree
which has a dark, almost molasses, like taste. 2 liters a day keeps the
doctor away ? That's mother's milk to me.

My best wishes to you in your struggle with this !

best, Uncle Sally

Aww, thanks, Uncle Sally :) Yes, the village in which I live has and is a
real eye-opener into the vast positives of human nature. Ironically, many
of us will and have sat down at the local restaurant and bitched and
moaned about how this place is run on rumours, how everyone's got their
noses in each other's business, but when the fecal matter really hits the
rotary impeller, they come together like a juggernaut.

Yeah, so far, so good: J gave me much advanced warning about the dental
issues, but the day the dental clinic had me scheduled to see the "pre-
radiation" was actually the second day of my radiation treatment - They
cancelled that appointment and haven't called back, since. If my teeth
start glowing every time I smile, I'm going to seriously consider doing
the ultimate in Canadian vengeance: I'll write them a very stern letter
:)

They warned me that it could happen, would most likely happen, okay, it'd
be amazing if it *didn't* happen, but it's one of those things you never
really appreciate until it's gone. Much like losing the hearing in my
right ear when they closed it up after surgery: Intellectually, I knew
I'd be half deaf, but it's the little things I didn't know about, like
stereoscopic hearing: Trying to find the cordless phone when it's ringing
is a treasure hunt in frustration each time, since it often ends up being
right in front of me, but I could *swear* the sound is coming from the
next room.

As with most of the side effect recoveries, they've pretty much just
given me ranges: It might come back in full in part, it might come back
right away or it might come back in twelve months. I'm pretty sure they
were all politicians or lawyers in past lives :)

So far, "sweet" is still there: I had french fries and gravy and a
brownie at the hospital cafeteria: The french fries ended up being
cardboard potato cut-outs, with the gravy being liquified cardboard
drizzled on top. The brownie, on the other hand, ended up being pure
chocolate-flavoured sugar (Not, mind you, that I am complaining :)

Many thanks! Believe me, alt.support.cancer has been a real boon so far;
It's a world of difference reading from and about those who have actually
gone through it, rather than doctors attempting to predict what you might
(or might not) go through.

Marc,

you might want to sign up for the ACOR listserve for Head and Neck
Cancer. There is some awesome information on this list serve.

http://www.acor.org/mlists/mlists.html

The archives will be very helpful to you as well as the emails.

Feel free to email me personally at this address if I can be of any help
to you. Just put something referring to ASC in the subject so I know
it's not spam.

Actually, I already signed up to it, but it appears to be moderated by
human beings (as opposed to a script) - My initial intro message was never
posted to the list and I find the traffic to be quite sparse, compared to
some other lists I am on (For example, the Angelman Syndrome support
mailing list is *very* active and does very, very well with no moderation -
the only requirement being no posts by non-subscribers and a volunteer set
of admins [of which I am one] to step in in case things get out of hand,
which is extremely rare)

Try posting again. There was a glitch and posts came back as though
there was a moderator. There isn't a moderator. It is becoming more
active now that the glitch got fixed.

Ahh, very cool - thank you for the update - I shall indeed try again!

Having been there, I empathize as well as sympathize. My taste buds went
totally weird before they departed. Water tasted like skim milk, coffee
tasted vile, etc.

The next thing to expect is extreme sensitivity to temperature. You may
find that you will need to have all liquids and solids at room temp.

Most people get their taste buds back after radiation. The first of mine
started to regenerate about 3 months after the last treatment (9/2006)
Some are just lately returning. On certain days, perhaps holidays on the
official taste bud calendar, they just turn off. Sweet is usually the
last one to come back. I could not enjoy a diet Coke until February. For
some this would not be a problem, but for me, whose blood was 1/4 diet
Coke, I missed it.

Do be prepared for your taste to have changed. Things you loved before
won't be as special, even though you can taste them again. You might
also find yourself appreciating things you didn't before.

Don't look for things to be the same after radiation. Things will most
certainly get better, but things will be different. Those of us who have
been through it rejoice in the difference because it is much more
preferable to the alternative.

Hang in there. It gets worse but then it gets better.
