Hi J and everyone
Sutent works by impeding angiogenesis.
An article I read today describes it as a 'targeted' therapy.  Does
that mean it is designed to only block angiogenisis in cancer cells?
I had assumed that angiogenesis was a natural function even in an
adult, but does it only occur during development?  If that is the
case, sutent seems a bit more interesting.

The hospital are encouraging me to do a trial of the vaccine IMA 901.
This has only been tried on 28 people before (phase 1),  and I'd be
one of 70 in the phase 2.
I feel somewhat that if I do it, it is entirely speculative.
I also feel pressured by the last oncologist I saw.  But there again,
I feel I would like to do a treatment.

If there was something out there with a 50% cure rate, I'd jump at it,
but there isn't anything even close. Sutent would give me side effects
for the rest of my life; ulcers hands feet mouth irritation.
901 might be ineffective

901 is apparantly easy to tolerate with no known side effects.

decisions decisions!

Tony,

I don't know about sutent, but I had Avastin, which is also an
angiogenesis inhibitor.  It doesn't just act on cancer cells, but for
an adult the other major need of new blood supply is in tissue
repair.  My docs had me wait something like 6 weeks after surgery
before getting Avastin, so my body would have time to repair the
surgery damage.  Since then, no serious side-effects, and no
expectation of long-term problems (unlike, say, Oxaliplatin).
Angiogenesis inhibitors are a fascinating chapter in cancer
treatment.  We found a video about the history of this group of drugs,
but I don't recall the name---you may find something good in your
local library.  Of course, your oncologist should always be your first
and last source of information about your treatment.  Good luck,
whatever your decision.

Hello Tony,
Here's the 901 one
http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/trials/trials/selectsearch.asp
Trial 5
A trial looking at IMA901 vaccine and GM-CSF, with or without
cyclophosphamide for advanced kidney cancer
This trial is looking at a new vaccine treatment called IMA901 and the
growth factor GM-CSF with or without one dose of cyclophosphamide for
advanced kidney cancer.

Renal cell cancer is the most common type of kidney cancer. If it spreads
to somewhere else in the body it can be difficult to treat. Doctors are
always looking for new treatments, or new combinations of treatment that
may work better.

IMA901 is a new vaccine treatment that is a type of immunotherapy. This
means it uses the immune system to kill cancer cells. IMA901 is an
experimental treatment and researchers are not sure yet how well it will
work.

In this trial, people will have IMA901 with GM-CSF (Leukine). This is a
growth factor that is sometimes used after chemotherapy to increase the
number of white blood cells in the body. Doctors think that giving GM-CSF
shortly before IMA901 will help the vaccine to work better.

Doctors also think that one dose of cyclophosphamide may help IMA901 to
work better. But they are not sure yet.

In this trial, everyone will have IMA901 and GM-CSF. And some people will
also have a single dose of cyclophosphamide before the first IMA901 and
GM-CSF injections.

The aims of this trial are to find out

   * If IMA901 can stop your cancer growing or even make it smaller
   * If cyclophosphamide helps IMA901 to work better
   * More about the side effects of IMA901
More information about trial 5 *

The latest I have seen about Sutent is some heart problems.
So wikipedia is up to speed with me (& vice versa)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunitinib
Looks like, in Phase III Sutent Progression-free survival (primary
endpoint) was more than doubled over Interferon.

There's a patient's blog at the bottom. It's not clickable (for me) so
I'll post it here

Interesting, likeable guy.

I hope this helps in your decision making.
Good to hear from you, Tony.
J
