Glomus Jugulare - Metastatic malignant paraganglioma

Hey all;

At J's suggestion: A new thread with more descriptive subject header
(Hopefully of use for anyone else in the future trying to find past
examples of this cancer)

So I've finished transcribing the post-surgery pathology report. It can be
found here:

http://www.internalysis.com/cancer/pathology.html

I could have just posted a copy of the PDF online, but I figured it was
probably a good idea to just transcribe to keep some information private
(patient numbers, etc) as well as actually getting a more thorough
familiarity with the conent myself. Reading it through is one thing,
transcribing (at least for me) made sure I read *every* word.

Of course, I'm no oncology expert - I'm hoping a couple of you might be
able to take a glance at it, but one thing popped out at me: Given that
some of the bone samples were positive for malignant paraganglioma, it
reenforces (to me) that radiation is the right way to go, at least as an
insurance policy.

Got a call from the cancer center today: I go in on the 4th for
"markings" - which I understand from my reading online is the ink markings
on my head for where the radiation is going to go into my head, or
something like that. One thing my mother was absolutely right about: The
people at the cancer center are a breed apart: So far, I haven't run into
one person who was grumpy, abrupt or rude. I'm pretty sure everyone's
laughed at my lame jokes, which they've probably heard a million times
before, which is nice :)

Given the cancer place is an hour and a half from home and we drive a gas-
guzzler of a Suburban, my wife and I decided that I'd rent a car for the
duration of the treatments: This leaves her a car for use at home and not
as much spent on gas while I go back and forth. I've had quite a few
friends and family in Ottawa say I could stay over if things get too
tiring, which I have a feeling I'll take advantage of, as the process gets
along.

I also have a patient information session scheduled for the 14th, which I
think is pretty much a "this is what to expect over the next few weeks"
type of thing.

So, it looks like things are speeding up a fair bit. My birthday's coming
up on the 7th - not exactly what I wanted for a present, but I asked for a
thermo nuclear device one year for my birthday and I'm pretty sure this is
as close as I'll get, so maybe everything isn't so bad, after all :)

Absolutely.
Thanks Marc. Interesting read.
I did not know that 2 lymph nodes were positive.

I'm glad you're pleased with the Ottawa.
I was just reading that another hospital there will also be treating cancer.

Good thinking but check off all the others on the form.

Not sure. - the 14th is a Friday.

You're right: They called back today to confirm the skull mask and
marking for the 4th and it turns out there's a patient information
session at 3:00 PM that same day, so I'll go to a friend's place after
the skull mask, then go back in the afternoon for the session.

When I was talking to the lady on the phone, I couldn't help myself :) :

Me:  "Okay, so Tuesday afternoon is for any questions I might have,
right?"

Her: "Absolutely, anything you're curious about, worried about or just
want to know more"

Me: "Okay, this is a ***really*** stupid question, but my friend and I
can't help but wonder..."

Her: "There is absolutely no such thing as a stupid question - Ask away
and I'll see if I can tell you"

Me: "Wait till you hear the question :) We were wondering if you finished
a radiation session and then went *immediately* to the airport to catch a
plane, would you set off the radiation detectors? (laughing)"

Her: "(laughing, as well) No, no - the amount of radiation you get per
dose is very small - There will be some radioactivity in your body, but
certainly nothing that would set off the detector. Now, if you were to
drag the *machine* through the airport, they might ask a few
questions..."

Okay, so it wasn't all *that* serious, but we were wondering :) I had
this vision of some poor sap (i.e. me) going through radiation therapy
and getting tackled at the airport for suspicion of bringing radioactive
devices through :) :) :)

Ah well, one can hope. I've put the "fully loaded and fueled AH-64 Apache
Longbow" on my birthday list for the 16th year in a row now for my wife
to consider. Do ya think playing the cancer card would (finally) get me
my attack helicopter ? :) :) :)

Dunno. But good thing you're not in BC - cruise missiles. :)
We don't have to defend ourselves against Great Britain (eh, Alayne?)
J - wondering if she's lurking.

PS combining the days sounds good to me, as long as you're sure you'll have
enough time for the mask and tattooing (etc).  Did you ask them about the
afternoon session?  Or did they give you a guesstimate of how much time the
morning stuff will require?

Kingston says
http://www.krcc.on.ca/patient_visitor/patient_visitor_radiationTherapyTreatment.asp

"Please try not to arrange other appointments on the same day as your
simulator visit."

Or is simulation a different appointment?

Dunno, to tell you the truth, though it was the same lady who booked the
markings meeting as the patient info; Mask making is @ 9:45 AM, info
session @ 3:00 PM, so here's hoping it's not all that long :)

Mask Making Takes about 8 min once they start. If you are in the waiting
room for 6 hours you will miss the info session. Otherwise there should be
plenty of time.

The voice of experience is talking.  I have 2 masks siting next to my

Hey, that's cool - I was wondering that - "Do I get to keep the mask when
it's all done ?" (I couldn't see why not, since it's custom made) - Thanks!

Woohoo!

I figure I'm going to try to make the most out of this radiation thing, so
souvenirs are a plus :)

As soon as my shop warms up, I'm going to fire up the wood lathe and make a
radiation hazard symbol out of a cherrywood log and hang it over my side of

I'll post a pic when I do it - Given the massive dumping of snow we just
had, I don't think I'll be firing up the lathe in the next couple of days,
though :)

In case the thought hasn't come to you, you may wish to record the
information session.
So you can relisten at home and have your wfe listen as well.
I think it will empower her.

If it's tape, take 3. One person's tape ran out.
And a spare in case one breaks.

Hi Marc,
Most of the Head and Neckers, from this newsgroup are probably on the same
list at ACOR
http://www.acor.org/mlists/mlists.html
Theres possibly other Canadians there as well.
Bringing to your attention, in case you want to subscribe and see if they
have a list of questions to ask.
Or anything else you wish to talk about with others there.

I was waiting to hear back that your paperwork's taken care of, but since you
haven't and the session's coming up, letting you know about the list.

Yep, still waiting - Haven't called them on it - Have to make a
presentation in front of a bunch of government types this week, which I
didn't want to do with a radiation burn down one side, so the wait was a
convenient one :)

Hi Marc,
Thanks for the update.
It's good you've planned for overnight. I've just seen more prostate cancer
patients mention fatigue after or during RT.
It's been mentioned so often here, I have to think that the prostate cancer
patient you spoke to was either just starting his treatment, was afraid of
scaring you off or was exceptional in some way.

I think I forgot to mention the ACOR mail list for head and neckers to you.
So I thought I'd tell you while there's a lull in your schedule.
There mighrt be others who've had similar tumors and surgeries and treatments
there.
What's for sure there, is you'll get more tips about RT and replies than here.
http://www.acor.org/mlists/mlists.html
If you click on the HEAD-NECK-ONC (name) and follow the instructions, it's set
to "Digest (traditional)" which would be more convenient, I thnk, during
treatment. It can be changed by you at any time and you can unsubscribe if you
don't find it useful or no longer need it. I would create a different
/throwaway Yahoo account, so that friends and family emails are kept separate
from the HEAD-NECK-ONC'er messages - so you remain non-id'able with your posts
here..

There might be a problem (or ID'ability) with using your signature.
I see it as a valuable resource for Canadians. They may see it differently (ie
spam).

Anyhow, just so you know, the ACOR list is available if you're interested.
Best wishes with the presentation.

Keep in touch please, as you able and thanks for your reply.

Thanks, J; Found the list and joined.

The prostate guy I spoke with was on his 28th treatment - He seemed
pretty positive about it all. Another gentleman I spoke with was on his
ninth treatment - Same thing, pretty upbeat.

I'll call the ONC department on Wednesday to see what the status is - I'd
like to get this radiation thing over and done with to start getting on
with things.

Will do. I suppose my respite from dealing with it all had to end sooner
or later. Looking forward to my flight on Wednesday (I'm a kid when it
comes to plane rides :) ) Booked on Westjet - In addition to being
cheaper, their cabin crew tends to be funny as all hell. Last time I flew
Westjet, the welcome announcement was along the lines of "Welcome aboard,
ladies and gentlemen, we'll be taking off as soon as we can find the keys
to this darned plane..." :)

LOL, love their advertisements.
I know a lot of people who fly Westjet.
I've heard very few complaints.
Going to the US?

I meant to ask you, Marc.
Do you wear that helmet most of the time?
Do you have to explain often? (me picturing a store clearing out, thinking

No, just Toronto for the day - With the price of gas and a hotel stay, it
was actually cheaper to fly down for the day that drive there, stay at a
hotel, eat and drive back. That and it's an airplane ride :)

Helmet ? I wear a fire helmet when I'm on a fire scene, as a firefighter,
but other than that, no helmets for me :)

The hole in my skull is just below and behind my ear, so as the doctor
said, the natural shape of the skull is good enough protection for day-
to-day stuff. If I go skiing or bike riding or play sports, etc, I should
most definitely wear one, though.

My apology. You did explain in one of your initial posts.
And here I was wondering how you slept with that thing on. lol
or whether people had to call stores ahead of time and explain so people
didn't panic.

I had an awesome day today - I got to have a say in upcoming legislation,
got to play in a room full of people with more degrees and letters in
their names and titles than I could shake a stick at *and* they wanted
lil' ol' my opinions on several things :)

I was *not* happy about Bell Canada's announcement that they are
unilaterally imposing traffic shaping/throttling on all DSL ISPs in
Ontario and Quebec, creating the dictionary definition of "abuse of
monopoly powers", but that is sooooooo off-topic for this group :)

Hi J......coming out of lurk mode to say that with prostate cancer and
radiation, the fatigue doesn't start right away.  But it wouldn't hurt
if Marc went for a nap or to bed an hour earlier.  Steve has often
mentioned that he did that during radiation treatments.  My husband got
hit the hardest with fatigue about 2 weeks after finishing 25 IMRT
treatments.  He had HDR(adiation) before that.

Btw.....I stay in lurk mode because you have some pretty bizarre wierdos
on this group!!  Some of whom I recognize from other ng's that are not
related to illness.  I think these weirdos just plain suck, as the kids
would say.  Not to forget the Laetrile idiots and that ferrous idjit and
his l-o-n-g, boring copy and paste posts.  Sure is a diverse lot of
characters on here.  Tis a shame for those who are truly ill.

Happy Bunny Day......Heather

PS.....My best friend went to Mexico for Laetrile treatments for lung
cancer about 30 years ago (same old apricot pit treatment)......she died
a year later.  It is a total crock!!  Along with Essiac and other
homeopathic treatments.

Hi Heather,
You nailed it. The fatigue and your assessment of this newsgroup.
Actually some of your assessment gave me the best laugh I've had all week,
so thanks a lot. :)
I'd forgotten, to be honest, that you were coming to lurk, until yesterday,
when I was doing a newsgroup comparison between the 2.   And wishing this
one was as busy with patients as yours is.

Hi J......

Glad you had a laugh....the weirdos on this group could drive you to
drink!!  OTOH, perhaps a glass or two would not be a bad idea.

Hey...you can have the current troll on our group as well.  He is now
pretending to live in Toronto and that he knows our oncologist at
Sunnybrook......bwa ha ha.  I caught a tiny goof that only someone who
lives in Toronto would realize.

Btw....not sure what you are using to read and post to the news groups,
but do change your Time Zone to GMT minus 4 hours.  It is most
disconcerting to read your post an hour before you wrote it.....or some
such, LOL.

Cheers....Heather
PS....I am most intrigued by the poster "Figgertoes"......not sure if
you know that my nickname is "Figgs".  Due to a totally unpronounceable
surname.  Wonder if hers is the same??

Hello Heather,
Well, I'm not laughing anymore.
Looks like a newsgroup takeover from the regulars on
misc.health.alternative.
So i plonked a bunch of threads in order to refind people I was wanting to
reply to.
I pity Google and webtv people who can't filter
I suppose new people might be interested. I find them boring since they've
been discussed here so many times, over the years. Some may learn from it;
others, like john the whaleto are deeply embedded in conspiracy theories and
hate's of conventional medicine.
On the other hand, they can see these same discussions on m.h.a.
If it's not one thing, on this newsgroup, it's another.
Does that mean you wouldn't want to be a supporter here? <g>

Yes, I saw you mention Figgs on the prostate cancer newsgroup.
I'm not sure I remember the story about Figgertoes.
She ad/or her husband explained it, - might be about their pet cat - more
toes than usual (?)
Maybe Fig could come over and explain it to you.

Withholding comment about s*afire. Have to review his posts again and
comments may follow on that newsgroup.
If I recall correctly he's "preaching" watchful waiting.

Sorry about my clocks. There's 2 on this computer and two times show in my
headers.

GMT minus 4 hours says Atlantic Time. They're an hour ahead of me.
I think the problem is that my clock did not change in march. I manually
changed it.
It will change the first Sunday in April, as it always did, so I will let
it, then adjust it back.
I think that will solve the problem.
J
Heather - 25 Mar 2008 18:00 GMT
I will get back to you, but there is a little program, called "TZEdit" I
believe, that one of the Microsoft MVP's told me to get and it
automatically adjusts for the NEW DST dates.  I will hunt it down for
you, if you wish.

As for people taking over ng's.....happens more often than one would
wish.  I just killfile the foul-mouthed idiots on the antivirus groups
until the barrage blows over.  I suppose one could answer these idiots
but carefully leave out this group and hope they wouldn't notice.  Yeah,
and pigs fly too.  8-))  They will get tired of it and peter out, I
should imagine.

Cheers.....Figgs

I have other "computery" issues or work to do.
So will work on this, as able and more information is incoming.
Just wondering how the posting time presents an issue for you?
Give me an example, Thread name or show header.
There's several possible reasons why that's happened or is it all of them?
No one else has mentioned a problem.  Threading (from my view) looks fine.
I see you're using aioe.org and Microsoft Outlook Express 6
Thanks

OK.....I happen to have a quirk or two and clocks being absolutely dead
on is one of them.  I even drive MYSELF nuts!!  I will show you the
headers from Sunday and I only happened to catch it because I read it
*before you wrote it* according to the time on it.

OK......according to the above header and my ****, you posted this at
8:49 pm on Sunday (20:49 minus 12 hours).  But the time on the actual
post on the ng is "9.49".  You can easily check this one cuz it is only
3 days old.

You are showing a time difference to Greenwich/Zulu/Zero/whichever of 5
hours, but now that we are on DST, it is only 4 hours.  It is difficult
to explain, I guess.  But one of the Microsoft MVP's told us about this
new little program which would automatically change us over on the NEW
proper time change day.  So not everyone would either know about this or
use it.

If you check my headers, you will see mine says *minus 4 hours* because
the program changed it internally.  My time zone which is still set at 5
hours less than GMT, but the program reset the DST time.  And I have now
confused myself.  But I did check some of the other *normal people* on
this group and some are showing 4 hours (zela for instance).....

Normally one doesn't see when a time is wrong unless you happen to be on
that news group and see that one or two posts are an hour ahead of the
real time.  Or it is a glaring error of a day or two.  Not a big deal
and as you say, your computer will change it on the old day.  Antivirus
people tend to be a bit persnickety (anal?)and will tell you when your
clock is out of whack, LOL!!

Hey, you are not just a pretty face, lol.  Yes, I am using aioe.org for
this group and a couple of antivirus ones.  I also have Motzarella on
here because for some bizarre reason, *aioe* will not show Steve K's
posts.  I do have one other that is *read only* in case the Motzarella
doesn't work.....which happens the odd time with these free ones.

You still have Windows 98??  Well, it is better than WinME.  I had ME
before and that is the MS news group I was volunteering my help on.
Still do for the odd person that has that O/S.  But we use it more for a
chat group cuz we have known each other for eons!!

So not to worry......it just surprised me because I knew it was really
about half an hour before that time when I saw your post.  I forgot that
not many people know about TZEdit.

Cheers.....Quirky.  (only have one other, lol)

WHOOPS!!  I reread this and my apologies.....LOL.  I didn't mean to
infer that you were not normal......I was referring to the Laetrile
weirdos and other assorted wingnuts on here.  If I had the time and
energy, there is a news program that allows you to cut out crossposting,
but I just killfile the IP's & safires of this world.

Bowing profusely.....& ROFL!!

Hello Heather,
I just checked and it says 8:49 pm.
Marc's is set to -500 (just like mine).
I think yours is wrong, unless Toronto extends way out Eastward..
Do you find yourself getting to appointmenrts late? <g>
Xela's in Boston which is probably Atlantic time.

Sorry. I'm not changing mine. I'd be late for appointments.  When it springs
forward 1st Sunday in April, I'll change it back one hour.

I hate to ask what your other quirk is.  But Top posting, is like reading
the page of a book backwards. (from the bottom of the page up). <g>

Nope, grin.  I am chronically late for everything, but usually only 5 or
10 minutes.  Sorta doesn't go with a clock obsession, eh?

Xela is in the same time zone as you and me...Eastern Standard.  Using
the above page and going into it a bit further (UTC minus 5 to be exact)
gives the following:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Eastern_Time_Zone

Note first paragraph on time zones.  Hey, I taught astrology for kicks
at night school for a couple of years, so do know my time zones pretty
well.  However, I use GMT rather than UTC as a point of reference.
Military uses "Zulu or Zero Hour".

Hokay, Jose.....or Josette (giggling to myself because I am using the
spanish pronunciation)

Oh boy, now getting after me for top posting.  The line forms behind me
for that.  I think I shall add "stubborn" to that short list of quirks,
LOL!!

I LIKE top posting.  And on the Microsoft news groups, we give people
hell who bottom post.  (evil grin)....

Have a good weekend, old sock.....Heather

My apology. You're right. We're all in the same time zone according to a map
I found at wikipedia.

Thanks Heather.
If you took a break you missed all the fun. <rolls eyes> <g.>
I hope you had a good one.

Had a good one, thanks.  I am now designing jewellery and found the
*perfect beads* on Saturday, so must get at that.  However, I peeked in
at the "certifiable lunatics/spammers/wingnuts" at least once a day.
Where on earth did you pick these cretins up??

The odd one I recognize from other groups and their main goal is simply
to disrupt and destroy.  As you can't moderate an ALT group, all you can
do is killfile them.  OTOH, one could use a different name and drop this
group off the list and say rude things to them.....ROFL!!  Believe me, I
have been VERY tempted.

Cheers for now.....bedtime here in the GTA....(11:15 pm)

Heather
