I've just been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. I'll be having surgery
on 02/13/04 to remove my left kidney. Any advice of any kind would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Edward and welcome to a newsgroup nobody really wants to join.

I believe we've had two renal cell cancer posters in the past year or so.

Not to mention, Jerry who had tumor(s?) removed and is NED (no evidence of
disease) for several years now.
He's busy with work and does not come to the newsgroup.  I will copy this to
him, in case he has time to communicate with you, but he's on the road quite a
bit, is my understanding.

A friend on another newsgroup, who has other serious health problems, had a
kidney transplant almost a year ago.  It was a tough surgery but with
excellent care, he pulled through and is doing quite well.

If you've not researched, here's some links for information
http://www.urologychannel.com/kidneycancer/treatment.shtml
http://www.cancer.gov/cancer_information/cancer_type/kidney/

and Steve Dunn's kidney cancer webpage http://www.cancerguide.org/kidney.html
http://www.cancerguide.org/rcc_localized.html

There's also currently more than 800 subscribers to the private ACOR mail list
for kidney cancer
http://listserv.acor.org/archives/kidney-onc.html

Those last two  (above) would probably be your best sources of information and
support (unless there are other posts here, so watch for other replies).

Stay with us, if you wish through the surgery and beyond.
I wish you the best possible outcome with your surgery and hope to hear that
you'll be NED also.
Best,
J

I can offer absolutely no advice, but to give you some support, I am having a
laparoscopic procedure on the 9th.  It will also be my left kidney, along with
the renal vein which the cancer has attached itself to.  A friend of mine who is
a doctor advised me that I had more to worry about with a rectal thermometer,
than this procedure.  I tend to believe him since he has great credentials.
However, I have been attached to the kidney for 65 years, and look forward to
the procedure as losing an old friend.  I have been encouraged by many doctors,
and have lots of friends praying for me.  I was told that the renal cancer is
one of the least aggressive, and one of the easiest to treat.  Please keep in
touch, and I will let you know what happens when I get back home.

On the 9th of February,
If I wake up in heaven, I will be ecstatic
If I wake up at the clinic, I will be grateful.
Simm Webb - 26 Mar 2004 18:39 GMT
Well, on the 2nd of March, I went into the Clinic.  Prior to going, I went and
voted, and then went to Mass.  I arrived at the Clinic at 9:45 (15 minutes
early), and began the procedure.  I was taken to a dressing room, where I put on
the usual hospital garments,  Then I was given an IV and then waited for about
15 minutes.  Then they wheeled me down and up halls to a waiting area where I
had a warm blanket put on me and I waited till about 1:30.  I was then wheeled
to an operating room, wheeled in, and transferred to a table.  All kinds of
items were then wheeled in around me, and the nurse at my head plugged a needle
into my IV.  The next thing that happened was that the recovery room was
gathered around me (about 15 seconds according to my sense of time) to
congratulate me on the birth of my 8 pound 13 ounce grand daughter in a hospital
down the road.  I saw a clock which read 9 PM.  I then felt the area around my
kidney and sure enough, there was some odd feelings there, which I hadn't known
before.  I had been through surgery and was left to nap for an hour.  I was then
wheeled into a room where I was to stay till Friday.  The next day I was
escorted to a bathroom where I received a sponge bath.  I lived like this till
Thursday, when they pulled the Foley Catheter.  For 4 hours I tried to go to the
bathroom, unsuccessfully and the catheter was reinserted.  On Friday, I had the
catheter removed, and at the time, was unable to show activity in either my
bladder or bowel.  One last sit on the throne, and I finally presented some
urine, which made the nursing staff quite happy.  Anyway, I was taken to a
nursing home in Lakewood (close to home) and logged in.  I was able to walk
slowly at the time, and spent the weekend going to the bathroom.  Monday, I
began physical therapy and did exercises.  This rigor I did for 3 weeks till
today, when I was discharged to go home.  During this time, the rest of my
system came awake, and today, I am weak, and hopefully, I will recover.  A week
ago Wednesday, during a follow up visit, I was advised by the surgeon that I
could take a whirlpool bath, I could take a shower, and finally the cancer was
confined to my kidney, and no evidence of it was shown to penetrate the wall,
meaning that in 6 months, I will get a follow up Cat Scan, and if it is
negative, I should not worry further about Cancer.  Now, it is time for me to
get my strength back.
