Actually, probably need a shoulder.
I have been a lurker and occassional poster.
Anyway, tonight I went to the bathroom and the result was a lot of bright
red blood. I do suffer from constipation from time-to-time but not lately
and I do have hemmorhoids.
Still, this is terribly scary. I've called my GI and the doc on call said
his office would call me back in the morning. I suppose a colonoscopy is in
my future (hopefully ASAP). This type of thing happened 6 years ago and
that's when I had my last colonoscopy. They found nothing but the hemms.
(and a small hyperplastic polyps or something like that, supposedly the
safest kind that doesn't become cancer).
Anyway, obviously I have to investigate. Any hopeful words? Is it true that
while one can never be 100% sure, the bright red blood is usually a fissure
or 'rhoids or some other benign thing?

Yes, Mel.
(my impression is that they don't see hemorrhoids, if they've just recently
burst).
But be sure they have a good look.
Then you'll feel reassured.

Best we can do is a post...
The on call physician asked questions about quantity and timing and your
general health, yes? And concluded it is not an emergency. The technical
term for bright red rectal bleeding is hematochezia, by the way. Yes,
hemorrhoids are far more common than colorectal cancer, and you already
know you have hemorrhoids.
Hang in there. Have a drink? (Re)read a good book?

I've only had the bleeding once before, as I said it was 6 years ago. It
happened once and never again...until 4 hours ago!
My fear, of course, is the obvious one: cancer. I was due for a colonoscopy
next year but my guess is that would be the test they would do. I am male,
61 years old. I should know more after the office calls tomorrow (and I'm
calling them if they don't call!)
I just don't handle these things very well. There is that inner FEAR.

If it's any help, bright red blood usually is hemaroid.

It's okay to be scared Mel, fear of the unknown is a natural reaction. Hang
in there until you know what you're dealing with, fear of the unknown is
sometimes worse than the fear of the reality.

After a lot of phone tag, I am to call them tomorrow and set up an
appointment (scope, that is). They said it would happen in 1-2 weeks (Cheryl
took the message).
I hate getting old, but it beats the alternative!
I'll let you know what transpires

Colonoscopy--set for 1/31 (in 2 weeks; wish it was sooner, but not bad)

Hopefully the time will pass quickly and you will know what you are dealing
with.
