The lights were on in most of the building on Thursday morning as 50
firefighters assessed the damage and pumped water out of the building.

The hospital's chief executive, Cally Palmer, said the full impact of the fire
was not yet known, but five operating rooms and at least two wards were badly
damaged.

The hospital treats more than 40,000 patients from Britain and around the world
each year and the fire is a huge setback for cancer treatment, said Professor
Ray Powles, the hospital's former head of hemato-oncology.

However, he said valuable research material would not be lost because of a
second site in Sutton, on the southern outskirts of London.
