just out of curiosity....

Cancer runs rampant on my mom's side of the family and I wish I knew if it
ran on my dad's side and I also know that I'm probably genetically
predisposed to getting cancer. So, just out of curiosity, I'm still
breastfeeding my infant but still do the monthly exams and I found a small,
semi-hard to hard pea-like nodule a couple of times close to my
collarbone/shoulder area but then it seems to disappear.... sometimes I find
it a couple months in a row and then on the 3rd exam it's gone or I find it
for only one month and upon the second, third and fourth, it's gone.... my
doc hasn't said anything when I go in for my well exams so I suppose he
hasn't felt anything.... is this something to be worried about? does size
contribute to cancer risk (meaning if someone's a size B cup or DD is there
a difference in risk factor there or is it pretty much the same?) or is it
simply not factored in at all? I'm a firm believer in "Knowledge is Power"
so.... that's why I'm asking. I honestly don't believe that what I've found
a couple of times is anything to be too worried about but I do let my doctor
know immediately and he'll have me re-exam within a few weeks and if it's
there, I generally go in for my own peace of mind.... either way, I already
know what I'd do if I found out I had breast cancer.... or any cancer for
that matter.... aggressive treatment. Thanks in advance!

obesity is indeed associated with increased risk of breastcancer; apparently
related with a higher estrogen level

get your exam, and then stop worrying; it doesn't make sense to have
sleepless nights about this

=) thanks! obesity isn't really too much of a problem for me....
unfortunately though, a lot of the weight I gained during pregnancy went
straight for the chest..... I'll check out the link and definately will be
getting in to see the doctor next week. Thanks again!

Does Breast cancer run in your family...since other cancers have no relation
to breast cancer. Secondly chances are that the lump you feel could be
related to breast feeding
.http://www.imaginis.com/breasthealth/breastfeeding/mastitis.asp. My advice
to you is to see a MD ASAP since this condition needs treatment, also if in
the worst case sceniro you had breast cancer getting it evaluated sooner
rather then later would make a difference .. Good luck.

Thanks....
because the lump shrinks on its own, I think it is mastitis (which sucks but
is a part of life) and at one point, I had my doc check it and because it
was warm in the area, he said I need to just watch it but that instead of it
being round and like a BB or a Pea, it was slightly elongated which
indicated to him that it was a duct or gland.... he still wants me to keep
an eye on it...
Breast cancer running in my family.... I'm not completely sure. I'm gonna
start questioning my parents a little more. I just need to know right now,
what kinds of questions to ask the doc as well as what to look for, aside
the lump....

I had a quick look at Paget's, Phylloides and Mastitis and IBC and Ductal
Well maybe you should have a look at them all.

Hi slykitten,

Prevention has an excellent subsite on breast cancer prevention here:
http://www.prevention.com/cda/feature2002/0,4780,6246,00.html

Between their FAQ and the article "10 Breast Cancer Myths Debunked"
http://www.prevention.com/cda/feature2002/0,4780,6029,00.html, it pretty
much answers all your questions.

In brief, though:
1)  When in doubt, ask your doctor to investigate any lumps you may find.
2)  Breast size doesn't matter.  (Any woman with breasts can get breast
cancer.)
3)  Do what you can to reduce controllable risk factors such as smoking and
obesity.

I get pea sized lumps sometimes in the same place in my right breast. Only
once has the doctor managed to find it as it seems to disappear after about
a week. Basically she said that it is due to hormonal changes in my cycle
and not to worry too much about it
