At the risk of sounding prejudiced rather then discriminate, what are
these types of posts doing in alt.support.cancer?  "MI5 Persecution:
BA984 LHR->TXL 13/6/98 (1330)"  I mean shouldn't this person get with
the "pogrom"? (okay okay, I reread the post and that was awful, sorry
- really!)  At present I find being persecuted by cancer is enough to
deal with in this group.  We don't deal with  the balance of cancers
even and focus on  head and neck here.  J, can't you find a home for
this person?  I simply won't waste expensive emotions on these posts
and resent the space they take up on the screen.  If nothing else,
PLEASE SOMEBODY, tell me how to filter them out cause I am too
illiterate in that.  Thanks and remember we are all in "this" together
but not "that".  ipunty  p.s. Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving and
if you can't taste it, imagine it - next year you will!  Also,
remember to pray for the troops!

Hello Ipunty,
As of recent date, this should work for people using Google
http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html
Must use with Firefox - looks like you have it.
If you read through the messages, "Google toolbar"  is not required.
Print that up as a guide on how to use.
Leave message at the bottom of that page if you have a problem.
I haven't used it because I don't have Firefox

You haven't answered Alex's Question if you are Using Windows Vista.
If so, might be easier following her instructions.

I'm confused. There's 2 scripts
Grease Monkey seems to be here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
and there's an "install now" button there.

I don't know if that's the right one.
The other, when I click on it, asks me if I want to open or save.
It's javascript and sits on the navigation bar as an icon or shows  up on the nav bar when going into
google?
Why don't you ask them?
There's a form there to ask questions. http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html

I didn't read Alex's msg as a question.  I am using XP Home edition on
this computer.  Beyond that I don't know what you girls are talking
about!  I am kinda iliterate when it comes to this stuff, sorry.  And,
thanks!  ipunty

Vista has a program called windows live, it is very similar to windows
outlook.
Your ISP has directions and how to set up the email and newsgroup.
When you have all those settings set you can start to filter posts you
find offensive. If you don't have windows live set up, I would set up
Firefox ( an alternate browser) with their email client.

Do you have any kids or neighbor who knows there way around a computer
they could help you set up the program.

Here is a link to your ISP on how to set up thunderbird, using your
ISP settings, they don't have directions for window live .

http://myembarq.com/files/embarq/support/EmailPrograms/thunderbird.php

I don't see any mention of usenet groups, my ISP comcast has an option
to set up an usenet account, I don't see that option on your ISP.

My long winded answer is that from what I can see you can only access
this group via google which doesn't not have the capability of
filtering  posts..

I sent the man a message and asked him to email you OR put the step by step instructions on the page
(above), so hang in there inpunty. We'll to get this sorted out.  http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html

Another option is http://news.individual.net/ for accessing newsgroups with your Thunderbird
but: it's $15.00 approximately/month and a year's has to be paid upfront.
And doesn't help you if you want access the newsgroup when you're away from home.

astraweb is the one I use. For $10 one gets more gigabytes than one can
use in a lifetime (if you don't do binaries). I've had it for 2 years
and have barely made a dent in the 25 gigs. I use Thunderbird as my
newsreader.

news.individual.net was my news server of choice until they started
charging. They want to hold a credit card number.

Here's the web site for astraweb. Click on the 25 GB for $10

http://www.news.astraweb.com/

If ipunty (or anyone else)emails me, I will send him detailed
instructions on how to get Thunderbird and set it up with astraweb.
Thunderbird has a very easy filter creation feature.

Thank you everyone.  I barely know what any of you are talking about.
Finding someone to help seems to be the best solution.  Happily I am

So if various and numerous monthly unexpected very long posts occur, how does that affect you?

He doesn't understand a word we're saying. :)
If someone was there to see what's on his computer and talk to him about how he plans to use it
and examine and explain the options, I think they could get it sorted pretty quickly for him.

First, one only pays for the downloaded posts. Headers are not charged
for. Most of the groups I'm on don't allow pictures or file attachments
so with text only, it's precious few bytes to download

I've downloaded many, many long posts. I subscribe to 12 groups and
have to deal with the people who don't snip and those who insist upon
copying every preceding post. In the two years I've been with Astraweb,
I still have 24.78 GB left of the 25 GB that cost me $10 in November
'05. At that rate, I'll have enough GBs for life.

Thank goodness Google has made Usenet available to all. Unfortunately it
doesn't come with filters :-)

$10 a month is $10 too much for UseNet. Any ISP worth their salt provides a
newserver at NO extra cost. I'd advise you to find a new ISP WITH a
newserver included.

Not $10 per month. $10 for 25 GB. One time payment. That's enough to
last me a lifetime. (A cancer-free lifetime)

Sorry, I thought that was clear.

From what I've heard the ISPs with the built-in newservers don't give
great service. I know several Earthlink users who have gone to other
newservers because of Earthlink's poor service.

YMMV

Hi Janet,

Google's lack of per-user filtering seems like a strange missing piece to
me. I am using "IGoogle" which I have custom tailored to fit my needs, and
they did an excellent job on the web-ui for that, imho.

I've thought of writing my own custom interface to Google, but have decided
instead to see if I can develop and market a front-end for EasyNews (they've
got some real deficits in their search engine capabilities for binary
files).

Best to you, too, my friend. Go for it! Have fun with it! Maybe you can
get some folks here to Beta it for you.

I'm sticking with Astraweb as a newserver for my lifetime fee of $10. I
don't do binaries, so it's plenty for me. I have used Agent but am much
fonder of Thunderbird as a reader even though I paid for Agent. I
downloaded Thundebird after making the switch from Mozilla Suite to the
more modern Firefox. I missed the way MZ handled newsgroups. Tbird does
it for me.

I use EasyNews service to access Usenet groups which costs US $ 9.95 per
month billed to my credit card.

http://www.easynews.com

Their customer support is quick and responsive. They've been around a long
time and have massive server power.

I use Outlook Express running on a computer using Windows XP Pro to read
both e-mail and news groups.

Outlook Express is an old program, and the interface to its filtering
capabilities could certainly be improved, but you can block individual
addresses easily, create filters to block messages containing certain words
in the Title or body of the message with a little more effort. If you are
using Outlook Express, feel free to ask for support.

EasyNews gives you 50 gigs of download a month (more than I could ever use),
have 50 day retention of all files on all Usenet groups including binary
groups. Simple but effective user interface via the web for perusing binary
groups and selecting files to bundle and download as zipped files.

The best to you, too, Uncle Sally.

However, it pains me greatly to see someone paying at least $10 a month for
what I received and have received for FREE, since April 1993. That's $120
bucks a year, MINIMUM!!! They just has to be a better solution out there.

I wouldn't pay $10 per month either, but I've tried free servers and
found that I got what I paid for. $10 for life and good support via
email is a bargain. So far I've paid 41 cents per month. The longer I
use it the cheaper it gets.

I see you are on Windows Vista, you can filter posts on the Windows
Mail program. Check with your ISP on how to set up groups.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, Alex
