betsyb - 07 Nov 2007 14:31 GMT > Roll Call (November/ 07) > [quoted text clipped - 21 lines] > you) > J Wanna guess? I have an appt today with my Onc Doc. So far I have had tumors in my right lung, 2 on the back of my esophagus, one above my left collar bone and one big momma on the head of my pancreas. All tumors responded well to a combination of radiation and chemo. The momma on the pancreas only shrunk it in half. Guess that is good. Now we are experiencing pains in the right and left kidney area. Scared silly. I am not sure why. Bad posture? Could be. Need to get a sturdier chair to sit at my computer? I guess I will have to let her know. I will chack back when I have some definite info.

Did someone check your urine for infection? Worth a shot? Send a clean catch in sterile container to GP or onc? Has to be fresh or in fridge no more than 4 (or 6?) hours.
Hang in there, pal. J

Been disconnected for three months and I seem to be passing everything just fine.

Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining the wire, Betsy. Wear rubber soled footwear, in the interim, so you stay grounded if lightning strikes. :p J
The Bobert - 09 Nov 2007 01:01 GMT Guess it's about time to check in.
I was diagnosed with SCLC May 29, 2003. No nodes affected, but some fluid in the lower lobe of my left lung. Pneumonia in the upper lobe. Aggressive treatment straightened out the lung problems. and got the cancer. It was no walk in the park, but I lived through it.
Mets to my brain a few weeks after the chemo was over. Whole brain radiation got the mets, but one popped up a month later, and I went to Stanford for CyberKnife treatment. By Jan 2004 the cancers were gone and I've been NED since then
For some unknown (to me) reason, I am in the 1% of people who make it this far out with SCLC. In a few months I will get another set of scans and if they are still clear, the doc said he may be tempted to use the "C" word (cured). Easy for him to say. He doesn't live with the dread that the next scan might find something.
Reading this NG over the past years has shown me that there are folks out there who had it a lot worse than I did. My cancer was detected early, and dealt with very aggressively which I consider the reason I was allowed to be typing this so far out from my original dx.
Tonight I am going to a Cherryholmes concert. <http://cherryholmes.musiccitynetworks.com/> I saw them on Leno a few months ago and loved 'em immediately. When I found out they were coming to Carmel, I got my tickets. But then, I am a sucker for fiddles and banjos.
Signature After four decimal places, who cares?

Kewl a bluegass band in Arizona. Lucky you ! Was it in an open venue? I hope you enjoyed it for me as well. :) J PS I lied last time. I wouldn't count chickens until late 2008. But if your onc declares a cure earlier, I'll raise a glass with you. Every day's a bonus as we get older.

It is good to hear about people who have stage IV cancer and are doing well. Glad you had the option to go to Stanford for treatment. You beat the odds and had to opportunity to get the cyberknife.

I have an appt on Friday with a new onc, the last one told me there was nothing he can do. Not suggesting there is anyhting the new one can do either, but I think he might have some more treatment for me.

I'm starting to feel a bit like a football. Doctor 2 has referred me back to doctor 1, who has already told me he was raising the white flag and there was nothing more he could do. So this should be an interesting appt. Maybe Doctor 1 will give me the mdx-010. Maybe not.
> J J - 12 Nov 2007 11:58 GMT > J wrote in alt.support.cancer: > [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > more he could do. So this should be an interesting appt. Maybe Doctor 1 > will give me the mdx-010. Maybe not. Hello Jacques, I forget if you've mentioned that one before. It seems to be called Ipilimumab It says it's ongong, but not recruiting http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00289640
I also found that the FDA has fast-tracked a combo of MDX-010 in combination with MDX-1379, a melanoma vaccine. W http://www.medarex.com/cgi-local/item.pl/20041005-623388
So I've been looking around clinical trials, whose front end has been changed, so took me longer, for MDX-010 in Australia and this is the other one I found http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00324155 Dacarbazine and Ipilimumab vs. Dacarbazine With Placebo in Untreated Unresectable Stage III or IV Melanoma This study is currently recruiting participants.
So then I searched MDX-1379, and found this one http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00094653 MDX-010 Antibody, MDX-1379 Melanoma Vaccine, or MDX-010/MDX-1379 Combination Treatment for Patients With Melanoma This study is currently recruiting participants.
But there's no location :Australia (that I could see(check me on that please) I can see why they'd want to compare one to the other and then to the cominatin, but if it's not in Australia, that leaves you out in the cold, on that one?
If they're planning on have similar in Australia, or only in the US? Some food for thought or questions for the oncologist. Got to go now. Falling asleep :) J

The MDX-010 is a bit of a worry apparently because of the number of perforated boels (also a potential side-effect of taxol btw). But standard risk management of course is to weigh up the danger of doing it versus the danger of not doing it. No contest really. Have to go ahead.

Have to go ahead. Hello Jacques, I'm glad they spared you that trouble. One of the above now says "closed", so the data must have just been compiled on in Australia.
This seems to show the side effects of the combo they'll be giving you. http://www.cancernet.co.uk/chem-taxcar.htm You may wish to review the notes there, but I don't mean Premature menopause ;) J

No valid reasoning I can guess other than they'd have to surgically remove the french drain at the end of the wire. If I want to begin chemo in the next week or so that would be too much on my body. I guess I will have to get back with the original surgeon in Dec to see what he thinks.

Elsie - 11 Nov 2007 05:25 GMT Elsie here,
Diagnosed with stage III rectal cancer in 2003. I was 38 at time of diagnosis.
Doing well today, It's been almost 5 years. I have a feeling (knock on wood) that in Spetember of 2008, there will be a celebration :-)
Had a colonoscopy and CT scan recently. Both were unremarkable.
Kids are gowing up. My son is a freshman in High school, my daughter is a senior. I'm taking her to college visits these days - what a trip :-) Other than that, I'm still divorced, still single....
I am almost done with the MS degree that I interrupted when I was diagnosed.
Life is good - cancer is not necessarily a death sentence!!!!
Hang in there, Elsie

Should have done this when the whole crew was here a couple months ago. If I had known they all were coming I would have. Just Butch this time. Hope he loves turkey. Someone gave hubby an 18 lb turkey and we already have one in the freezer. I will have to cook this monster since it has set in the car hoping to find someone who could use it. Friends of our's were going after one that size so he took it for them. In the meantime they got another. Butch will have plenty of leftovers. forever, I bet.

J - 20 Nov 2007 11:05 GMT > Roll Call (November/ 07) > Regulars - please Update us, if you've not done so for a while. My uncle (cancer of unknown primary) passed away last week. It was diagnosed in late April or May, due to fracture of femur at the knee. A pin was put in and he had 2 or 3 sessions of RT, adjusted to using a crutch to hop around or wheelchair, had some physio, then was released home (had help from homecare and hospice).
He and the ortho doc decided on another surgery (late Aug/early Sept) - the goal was so that he could be more independent and put his weight on his leg. After healing, he was to start physio, but the surgeon was away for a few weeks, so that delayed his stay in hospital. Finally that got started. [He had had chronic pain in his spine for several years and they could not find the cause. Sometime in summer he told his wife he did not know if he wanted to continue surviving] However, after the 2nd surgery he enthusiastically did the physio and exercise on his bed. I spoke with him about a month ago and he was upbeat and looking forward to go home. He failed to wake up and nobody knew why. They did an autopsy, still no sign of cancer elsewhere; he died of pneumonia.
(nobody knew had it) He was cremated and will be buried in his family's plot next Spring. An adult child is staying longer with the aunt. Close family will continue to monitor her as she wishes to stay in the home and continue her regular activiites. Volunteering and bridge club. He was 82. She's around the same age and health is good. That's my update. J

Gemzar is the choice of drugs this trip. Arrived right on time, got all set to begin and my nurse got NO blood return. Not after flushing, pouring in saline, nothing. Off to Rad. we go for a scan and sure enough the darn port was clogged. They injected some magic potion and the clog went away and back to chemo we go. Got the magic potion and left 3 hours after arrivaal. I am told this will happen sometimes and not to get rattled. When I am done I amy need the port removed or replaced. Depends on the advice of my Onc. And that is that.

By the end of my treatment, they couldn't draw blood from my (double) port. They couldn't dissolve the blockage, so they used the port as a one-way and drew from a vein. It's good they were able to clear yours---maybe what was cleared took a long time to build up, and won't recur anytime soon. Three hours is no fun. I hope this is the last time that happens.
