I have a friend who has stage 3 colon cancer.  She is 42.  She is very
positive about her treatment and has a great outlook.  I'm very supportive
of her and keep in touch as much as possible as we are in different states.
The thing I find the hardest to help her with is when she goes for her
chemo.  She says it is so depressing and she is the youngest one there.  She
feels like everyone is dying around her.  All very nice people, but
extremely depressing.  What if anything do any of you do when you go to get
your chemo....?  How do you stay upbeat when surrounded with many sick
people?  I'm hoping I can give her a few ideas!!  Thanks in advance.

I'm 38 with stage 3 colon cancer.  I think I'm just a few months ahead
of your friend in treatment.

I have my moments when I am feeling sorry for myself, but most of the
time I am pretty upbeat.

Maybe it's support she needs and somebody who has been there?  If you
think it might help, don't hesitate to give her my e-mail address and
tell her to get in touch with me.

Thanks for the kind words Elsie...I'll ask her if she'd like to chat.  She
doesn't go on the computer much...but I'll check.  Sue

Well... in fact she IS very young to have gotten cancer. Yesterday at
the onc waiting room I saw a kid maybe 11 years old, no hair, in a
wheelchair, waiting for his name to be called. His parents were with
him and they were having a wonderful time together. Not faked. Just
enjoying each others company. Really alive.  Made me feel like s***
'cause I'm 56 with CRC stage IV.

I know it sounds insensitive to say that there's always somebody worse
than you. But if you do ponder that a bit and don't let it slide by
you, it can be comforting. I've known people who died at 80 who only
"existed." I've known people who died at 40 who truly "lived."

Best regards.

What you say above is so very true and something everyone should remember.
I will remind her of this.  She is certainly one of those that truly lives!
She is a role model for me.  Her strength is truly admirable.  She has two
small children 6 and 4 to care for and that certainly keeps her going.
Thanks for your words of wisdom.  Most appreciated.  My best to you.  Sue
