Adam - 21 Jun 2007 05:42 GMT Looking for users to test and give us feedback on a new cancer IE toolbar. Essentially, it searches all of the American Cancer Society content and resources directly from an IE toolbar.

I usually check these out (hopefully) before anyone gets whacked with a virus or spyware. Since I don't want an extra toolbar, I haven't and won't be checking it out. They can carry "payloads" is one reason.
Is that one the Google toolbar here? < http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/NWS_12_Google_Toolbar_Button.asp > If so, say so, and users can go to the webpage instead and read about it and decide themselves. And/or save it for their computer "gurus" to discuss and/or install.
Better yet, put the Google toolbar on the ACS web page template with a "search the internet" and "search this site" option instead ? There's room for those, just below "my Planner" JMO J
Uncle Sally - 21 Jun 2007 16:28 GMT Hi,
I strongly support J's assertion that you should ignore this link. The original message IP Address, 71.197.174.168, appears bogus, almost certainly faked. 71 is not an allocated TLD according to my inquires (arin.net, internic.net, apnic.net, etc).
I know the other "geeks" here will chime in.
In the meantime, just as J. suggests, go only to the Google link she provided.
best, Uncle Sally

Comcast is a big provider.

I think scrutinity on my posted link is warranted and a good thing and I appologize for not putting more information. This is not a bogus IP and it is an ACS application, but it is in BETA form therefore not to be on our main site. I am careful to always test applications both from a functionality standpoint as well as a user experience standpoint.
If you have any questions about the validity of the post, you can contact me at adam.pellegrini@cancer.org.
If you have any concerns about the toolbar, simply don't participate in the test. If you have ideas on how to make it better let me know or if you have any cooler ideas pleaes let me know.
Thanks again.

If one checked your profile, as many members do they would have seen were you work. One suggestion, I understand what Beta testing is but many here do not understand the concept. Also if you used your ACS Address initially your credibility would not be in question.
Hope it works well, Alex

Excellent point. I absolutely agree. This is my first time asking for BETA testing assistance via Google Groups (usually my usuability manager recruits folks) but I really wanted tech saavy input, so I went here.
I will update my profile per your guidance and I thank you for any further ideas.
Thanks!

Sir Alex,
I fall on my sub-net sword, go prone tko'd by TCP/IP, apologize for mis-information !
My cat (an-ex male) has had periods of intense unhappiness in the five months when I've been in the RxSlammer and he's been alone, outside the house, having to fight other cats at night some of whom are Muay Thai expert cats, being fed by visiting friends daily. He is a one-man cat, and I'm the man.
take care, Bill

I got nervous when you said 71.XXX.XXX. was not real since that is what my IP is! Glad to hear you are feeling good.
J - 21 Jun 2007 22:50 GMT > Hi, > [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > best, Uncle Sally Well the link he posted started with labs.cancer.org blahblahblahblah.exe We're told to beware of .exe's So I looked at his posting history and found these http://labs.cancer.org/ http://labs.cancer.org/forum_blog.asp he has other "labs" web pages (listed) there and it says it (the blog) has moved to http://www.adampellegrini.com/ (which, in part says) " We customized the look and feel to resemble wikipedia. 4. We created a template page to prepare for our massive data import. So, feedback so far? It rocks! People love the simplicity and we are now expanding its purpose to include allowing users to create memorial pages for loved ones who passed from cancer or our survivors. Also, pages allowing users to discuss their local Relay For Life events.
The next step is to import our over 65,000 pages of resources into the system using our resource template and consolidating the database. Check out www.cancerconnectionwiki.org"
He's also posted a job opening to Google analytics (link to the ACS is no longer valid, which is neither here nor there, if the job was filled).
Google Analytics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Analytics and I have this saved from a year or so ago. http://www.google-watch.org/ which claims that the Google toolbar has access to each person's hard disk http://www.google-watch.org/bigbro.html
I don't know if this guy is on the up and up or what he's wanting us to download/install, but I'll pass. J

Thanks for the concern. This toolbar is actually an experimental toolbar hosted on labs.cancer.org which is our test/BETA website. You will find that it is also linked from Adobe Showcase where we have several RIA applications posted which won Adobe site of the day awards. Please, if you don't feel comfortable testing this out, then definitely don't.
We do not put test or BETA items on our homepage because they are in fact, test/BETA applications and are not ready for prime time.
I appreciate the feedback about downloading .exe but also am hesitant about making this toolbar a script that would be even more scarey.
As I said, thanks again for those providing feedback!

This is a simple button that lets people simply add cancer.org to their toolbar.

Here is the link to our labs website. This is a test/experimental website for ACS and is not going to be ever connected to cancer.org. People testing out these applications help us understand what users want and what we should be focusing on from a "cutting edge" standpoint.
I applogize for not clarifying this in my earlier message, but I consider people testing out American Cancer Society online BETA's to be volunteers of a new type. If people are not comfortable, then don't participate. Those who do have good ideas about creating cancer tools to help those looking for information online, we need your help to come up with creative ideas.
Anyhow, if you are interested in volunteering in this way, let me know. My email address is adam.pellegrini@cancer.org
