Hi group!!  I have some concerns about Murray.  I thought someone might
now whats going on here. It's been a month I think since his
reinduction chemo after he relapsed, and his wbc still is quite low.
He was released from the hosipital on Dec 20th with a wbc of 1.6.  I
took him back to the hosipital on Dec 26th after checking his temp
(39.1) and him complaining of a stiff neck (he couldn't move it at
all). All I could think was "sh.t, this looks like menegitis"  Anyways,
apparantly they didn't think menegitis because they didn't test for it,
but his wbc was only 1.2.  He's in the hosipital now witha wicked
headache and still a stiff neck.  His fever goes up and down with or
without tylonol.  It will go from 39 degrees to 36.5 degrees and back
up again over the course of just a few hours.
He finished his neupegen 6 days ago.  What I want to know is:
1. Why is his wbc still so low?  Is it possible that the chemo isn't
working and the cancer is till there?
2.  Is his neck pain typical after chemo?  He never had it in his 1st
round.
The doctors here in my town are not experienced with leukemia and can't
seem to anwser my questions at all.  I feel like I'm anwsering theirs
most of the time.
Any info anyone can give me would be appreciated.

Hi Laurie,
Well, I've not heard of anyone with a stiff neck that can't be moved at all
(from chemo).
Dad had bacterial meningitis (but there's other types) and his was solved
with penicillin.
It's a worry, isn't it? Normally, we think if it walks like a duck and
quacks like a duck, it must be a duck, but Murray's situation is much more
complicated.
I would think the solution is for the hospital to contact the other
hospital where Murray was being treated or send him over there, ASAP.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.  I hope it gets sorted soon.
j- thinking of you

Meningism isn't always meningitis.................
Viral infections, bacterial infections, chemicals, malignant
infiltration...........many things can cause it, some serious, some not. It
should be reported to the patient's doctors, though
