hello Jeff,
I'm glad it wasn't cancer.
I would suggest you ask on alt.support.stop-smoking.
I know for a fact there are posters there who've had lobectomies.
And you can buddy up with others in your goals.
Good luck.

It doesn't exist on Med Broadcast.com
> alt.stop-smoking. ???
No - no such newsgroup exists.--

You have to ask medkb.com to give you access to alt.support.stop-smoking
The other way is to use Outlook Express (news tab or whatever email/newsreader
client you use) and your ISP in order to access newsgroups.

They went into me to do a lobectomy and decided instead to do a wedge
resection. Almost the same thing, they just took less lung from me.
> A) How long did it take you to recover from the surgery?

My surgery was June 23, and the place where they spread the ribs has
gradually gotten better. It's only slightly sore now. I was taking
codeine (generic Vicodin) regularly for a good while, now taking it
only sporadically.
I did nearly all my sleeping in the hospital sitting upright in the bed.
I was able after a week or two to lay down on my side or stomach and
sleep pretty well. There were certain movements that hurt, though. At
one point I had a chain reaction of such movements; I moved the wrong
way, it hurt, which made me move again the wrong way, which hurt more,
and so on. Called the ER doctor on call and my description prompted
him to tell me to come in for inspection. They didn't find anything
broken, but thought it a possibility from my story. (Incidentally,
it's been years since I've been comfortable laying on my back, and
that's the only reason I excluded this above. Probably would have
been just as comfortable on my back as my side or front otherwise.)
> B) Are there any kind of exercises (besides walking) or diets that I should
> be doing?
My surgeon gave me a gizmo that meters the way I inhale; basically it
encourages you to inhale slowly and measures how much air you've taken
in. More is better, slow flow is better. Just after the surgery I was
doing 2.5 to 3 liters; now above 4 pretty regularly with a one-time
peak of 4.5 liters.
> C) Can u please share with me your post-op experiences?
It took a while before I could sleep on that side, because stretching
the skin by the incision was uncomfortable at best and because putting
weight on the rib-spread area hurt too. I still tend to avoid laying
on that side, possibly now more from force of habit.
I felt quite short of breath for a couple of months. That's gradually
improved to where I'm now accustomed enough to my breathing to feel
pretty normal (which for me isn't great; lower back problems keep me
from doing any significant amount of aerobic exercise).

Thank you very much :)
Do you mean June 23rd of this year?
I'm on oxycodone right now. And today is the first day I am weening myself
off them. No more morning time pills. Now it's just late 1 in the afternoon
and 2 before bedtime.
I use the same breathing tube called spyrometer something or other. I get up
to between 1000ml and 1750ml and try to keep the indicator between the arrows.
Don't know what that is in liters (my math conversions are pretty bad...lol)
Yeah I still sleep sitting up. The pain I feel now is nerve damage around the
upper right stomache area and where they split my ribs. On rainy days it's
even worse.
I just hope that one day I can get back to doing regular exercises e.g
playing tennis and throwing a football.
thanks again for your reply. stay in touch

Yep, just a few short months ago.

Mine says "Voldyne 5000" on it.

If my ongoing recovery is any indication, that should be very possible.
Just remember that with less lung surface area, we'll need more aerobic
exercise to get to the same point as others.
