I have scarring inside my right lung from the Radiation. Does that ever go
away or am I gonna be winded forever?

Hiya Betsyb,

I just had a chest xray myself (They were checking for pneumonia). Due
to the radiation treatment, they zapped me from just below the nose to
the top portion of both my lungs, the RO had previously told me that I
could expect this and it was permanent.  As far as the shortness of
breath,  I had kind of been wondering why I was getting winded now when
I hadn't before (under similar circumstances).  That observation by you
answers some stuff for me that he didn't mention, so thank you!  I
think we are stuck with it,  Maybe excercise to build up some stamina,
but I know I'm not ready for that!

Perhaps Steph would care to chime in.

I kinda hoped for a better answer but I suppose I knew it. I was never
winded before this. I off loaded tractor trailers by hand, somerirmes 4-5 a
day. Bagged stuffed animals don't box up well.
Now walking at a quick clip from the parking lot to the Doc's office leaves
me puffin and not the bird.
I can walk at a slower pace in a place like Walmart for hours but the speed
is the difference. They did warn me about scarring but not about being short
winded. Or maybe witht he crash course I got so quickly I missed it.

I used the motorized carts that many stores supply.

I think most warnings are for "fatigue". That is easy to overlook when they
are throwing all that information at you. Instead they should say "extreme
fatigue." IMHO

It will go away.  It may seem like forever, but in about 6 months it will
be a faded memory.

That goes for you too, "ipunity"

I don't remember exactly how long it took. but eventually I could carry 2
loads of firewood up the back stairs without taking a break every 7 steps.

Maybe carrying the firewood helped.  Maybe you have to push a little beyond
what's comfortable to regain function?

Glad to read you're doing so well.

I'm not an expert, but I would think it takes time for the damaged cells to
slough off (and healthier ones underneath) to take over and/or new cells to
form.

That is better than we thought! Thanks much

True late radiation damage to the lung never goes away. Acute  radiation
effects do go away.

Thanks Steph, I will have to ask the Radiation Onc, next week which it is. I
will make a note to ask.

Had my appt today with my Rad Onc. The scarring should shrink, but as with
any scars, it dosn't go away completely. When I get back from my travels to
Fl and Cape Cod I will begin an exersize program to increase my heart rate
and breath rate. My Pulmonary Doc will make suggestions I can live with. And
not keel over.
I am one happy witch. Celebrated with chocolate chip mint ice cream. Small
bowl, Miss Fluffy!!

Hi Betsy,
It's good to know what you can expect, so you can plan for it.
Glad you got your answers and the ice cream. :)
Take care.

Already had the ice cream just in case a celebration was called for.

<smile> good thinking. I never tried the mint version. Quit the chocolate years
ago - too addicting.
I meant to get a chocolate covered cone this summer, but I forgot.
Travel plans for when the snow flies?

So a shindig in Fl and a clam dig in Cape Cod. <g>
Seriously though, it's good to hear that you'll be visiting your progeny.
Since I've never been to FL, what's the plans?  Shopping? Beach?
I'm sure it'll be fun. Please be sure to remind us; otherwise I'll worry if you
disappear.

Hopefully another one that'll be clear.

I am confident the scans will be just fine.

No beach in Fl for this chick!
Kevin enjoys eating out and his Dad dosen't? look out Chili's and any
seafood joints that have Stone/rock crab. I can never remember which it is.
Usually too cool for the beach unless there's a storm to look for sea glass.

Cape Cod, I have three cousins living there so motels are out. We crash in
whoever's driveway whenever we land, unless we are sure where the rock witht
he key is. We ususally spend as much time digging clams and scallops then
head to the ouse and cook everything we got. Raw or cooked is fine. Do some
shopping and head back to NJ. The other son takes me there for my birthday
every year. He works in CD and has to get back to MD for work.

You and Matti really have to stop this nitpicking here. Write each other off
this group. If it irritates me, I wonder how it affects the others who are
looking for help  and in  pain and only find this trash. Shame on you both.
