Yes, well, since the tumour was "growing down" his spine, I doubt he could
have been saved.
Shame though, maybe it could have been palliated.
And/or I don't recall 6 year olds (consistently) complaining of severe
headache.

Indeed. It's usually a tummache with 6 yr olds. "Mummy, I've got a
tummyache in my head"...
I agree it looks as though more investigations should have taken place
sooner; however I've learned over the years to be very wary of 'shock,
horror' news reports. They are invariably biased and the stories only
ever come to the attention of the papers through the agency of the
injured party - which makes it rather hard for them to be objective.
