Small lumps

Hello everyone,
I was diagnosed with Papillary carcinoma after a full thyroidectomy
last January.  My tumor was quite small, .5cm and my doctors felt that
taking a higher dose of synthroid was all the treatment I would need.
So here is my question.  Last week I found a small lump right under my
jaw bone.  I showed my doctor and he found a second one on the other
side.  He want's me to see my surgeon, but that appointment is only in
1 month.  I have heard of people getting things like this after
radiation, but I never went through that.  He says they feel like
nodules on my salivary gland that are now pressing on my jaw bone.
When I checked this up on the internet, it keeps reffering to Thyroid
cancer.  This doesn't mean that my cancer could be comming back does
it?  I have already posted this on the Thyca web site, I just want to
know what you think.

Thank you
Stephanie

Hello Stephanie,
I would think it's something benign, being bi-lateral, but anything any of
us says is only conjecture, until the surgeon checks it out.  keep that
positive thought in mind, over the next month.
And let us know when you know.
J - interested in what thyca had to say.

I had TT in July 06 for pap cancer and my tumour was 0.9cm and too small for
RAI like yours.  Like you I wonder about the likelihood of the cancer
returning to that area or somewhere close.  The doctors have not been able
to say anything other than it's unlikely.  Have you had a whole body scan
since the TT and if so what did that show?  If it's a return of cancer, the
good thing is that you have spotted it early.  Good luck and stay positive.

It could be anything, but clearly the concern is that these are metastatic
lymph nodes. It's unlikely, but possible.
You really won't know anything until you've had a fine-needle aspiration and
maybe a nuclear medicine scan and ultrasound. But the surgeon will know what
to do, and a month is not a long time with well-diff thyroid cancer, so
nothing terrible is likely to happen.
