My 61 year old father was diagnosed with CML in June 2006.  Along
with that diagnosis he also found out that he had
diabetes, hypertension, bleeding behind the eyes & on top of all that he
also needed hearing aids.  This all came as a complete suprise since he
has always been a very active, healthy man. He has been on Gleevec (
along with a bunch of other meds)  and they have seemed to have been
working.  He just had lab work done last night ( in the ER) and
everything seems to be in "normal" range as far as his platelets and
blood pressure and so on, but he feels worse than ever.  He has been in
so much pain and discomfort and he told me that he has never been so
tired in his whole life.  He is being treated at a VA hospital about 3
1/2 hrs away from where we live and it is difficult keeping everything
striaght because he has four doctors .  It has been pretty confusing
because there are so many things coming at once.  I would really
appreciate it if anyone that has been through or is going through
something like this could give me some advice.  I have so many
questions that I haven't been able to get answers for.

Hello,
Sounds like your father is having a tough time of it. I'm sorry to hear
that.
You may or may not get other responses here.
I usually refer leukemia patients (and/or loved ones) to the private ACOR
mail/support lists.
You can join by clicking on the appropriate named list here
http://www.acor.org/mailing.html?l=c
After "joining", the "list owner" aka moderator will email you fairly
quickly as to when you can start sending and receiving messages (and access
to their archives).

In addition, I think that some of the resources here may be of help to you,
so please bookmark this link.
<http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/all_page?item_id=4591>

Pam may have some helpful advice about VA hospitals, if you don't find
answers on the ACOR list.
In addition, some prostate cancer patients are experienced with same, on
alt.support.cancer.prostate.
So please don't hesitate asking, if you think they can assist, although
most, if not all, probably know little about CML, so probably best to start
with the ACOR list first.

Best wishes.
Your father and you and your family will be in my heart and thoughts during
this difficult time.
Let me know if I can be of further assist, anytime.  I don't have all the
answers, but i do try to help.

Hello, phatmomma,

Annie's 22 year old son was diagnosed earlier this year.  She & her
husband are on a long motorhome trip where they're raising some money for
research.  I'm posting these links for the blog & other info.  But if you
email her your father's name, she'll be honored to add it to their RV so
he can 'ride along.'  Her son, Steven, is being seen by a specialist in
Oregon 9/7. Annie has done a fine job of chronicling their journey with
CML.

Hope this helps.

I hope your father gets everything sorted out. That's a lot to get hit
with all at once, but I'm glad to read he was active & healthy before.
Maybe that will give him some reserves to draw on.  Some hospitals have
low cost or free apartments where you can stay while receiving treatment.
Don't know about VA, but you could inquire.  I'm guessing you're trying
to group appointments/treatemnts to lessen the travel.  Maybe overnight
would make it easier sometimes?
