Well, Frank,
I expect nobody knows for sure, whether there's cancer (or not) in the other
part of your liver.

Frank you are asking the impossible from this group. No one really knows for
sure. I made all my arrangements the week I was first told of my cancer. I
wasn't willing to gamble and wanted my Husband and sons not to have to make
any difficult decisions. You might consider your wife the same. I am sorry
we had to chat this way. Safe trip.

Ihave asked my sister who's 1 yr younger than myself to do the
arrangementsif something goes wrong. She took care of my mom's arrangements
when she died in feb 99' from copd & and lung cancer. (she smoked for 40
yrs). SO Beth (my sister) said it would an honor for her and her husband to
take care of me when this happens. It will to much for my wife.  You have to
understand. We have been together nearly 3 yrs. Married for 1 1/2 yrs. I
don't even know If I will see my second wedding Aniv. Believe I would love

Frank,
Steph wrote that. Looks to me that it means from April. (when your liver mets
was dx'd)
The liver's a fairly large organ.
I thiink when they go in for surgery, they try to have a good look and feel
around, to see if there's any unforeseen trouble (that might change the
prognosis).

I take it they have ruled out removal of the secondary -- presumably too
advanced if it is causing so much pain.    Patients with liver secondaries
from colon cancer can survive for 18 months or more, and modern chemotherapy
has improved lengths of survival, if not necessarily always quality of life.
Perhaps yours is more advanced or aggressive, so that barring miracles or a
spectacular response to chemo (they do occur) then you may have only a few
months.   It is hard enough to predict, however, even when following up
one's own patients.

A shame that you have had to go through all this.  I feel for you.   Colon
cancer is one of the most often cured cancers, especially if found before
there is lymph node spread..

He's having half his liver removed, in August, Peter.
"My liver surgery is Aug 11 at 11AM I will have nearly 50% removed due

I thnk I understand, Frank.
It's not the kind of talk you would want to do at a support group.
Any luck (did anyone email you?) or have you tried the colon  ACOR list?
http://www.acor.org/mailing.html?l=c
There might be someone there caring and understanding, from your area with whom
you could speak with first by telephone, then if sounds like the right person,
agree to meet somewhere quiet.

Has the surgery date been changed? Earlier you mentioned the 11th.
What are you hoping to accomplish?
I worry because you mentioned your kidneys aren't the best and with scarring on
the liver and the reactions you have to medications, have you discussed risks
with surgeon?

Thanks for clarifying the date,  Frank,
The medications must be contributing to the confusion.
But could you please, "bottom post", post your reply, below ours.
It turns into a confusing mess with some of the topic going upwards and some
going downwards.
Bottom posting is the (expected) standard on this newsgroup.

I ask you again, what are you hoping surgery to accomplish?
Pain relief from the liver tumor?  If so, have you consulted with a radiation
oncologist?
Might be a way to shrink it and relieve some or all of that pain.

To extend what life I have by about 25%. Per Dr. Brink. I have seen the high
res scans my left lobe of my liver has been eaten up from the inside. The
whole on the surface is about 1.25 Inches wide and inside over 3.0 wide.
with moving nervrd, muscles, arteries, veins, we are looking at a 6-8+ Hr
surgery. Plus starting this eweek I will be banking my own blood. hope to
have 3 units rewady for thre surgery.

Your doctor can do a clinical exam and review you complete medical record. I
would take their advice over any information anyone dispenses on the
internet since you are a person not a stat.
Good luck with surgery. Alex

J advised Frank very sensibly. Before accepting any treatment, especially
aggressive treatment, make sure you understand the rationale, the risks, and
the likelihood of success. The best treatment is not always the most
treatment

J does not have all the facts,  recently J suggested to Nana to get a
wheelchair when in fact she may not have bone mets!!  If I was Nana I would
have been devastated if a credible person gave me that advice.  Frank's
doctor will provide him with an informed consent where all the risks and
benefits will be described.  I personally feel the clinician who has all the
medical records and performed a clinical exam is the right person to advise.
I don't remember Frank asking for advice, I think he is looking for support.

This is a support group not a Medical Advice group.

Get your facts straight.
Nana first mentioned wheelchair.
Here's her post.

Yes I have been on Femara and 6-month infusions of Zometa. It's a study to
see if the Zometa helps prevent osteoporosis. And the Femara took away all
my oestrogen and gives unpleasant side effects from that, but it sure didn't
stop me from getting bone mets.

I absolutely cannot figure out how to just get on with living and forget
cancer. I've been fighting that for 3 years and I'm not winning the battle.
We need to move out of the country home we have because we are so isolated
and have no nearby friends. I want to move close to my daughter and her
kids, where I will also be close to the hospital where my onc is. Now that
we are looking at houses, I look at everything from a cancer perspective.
Example: if bones in my spine break and I eventually need a wheelchair, will
I be able to manoeuvre. Is there a downstairs room that can convert into a
bedroom for when I end up really sick. How many years do I have left? Will
the cancer still metastasize to my brain or my lungs? This whole business
really, really, sucks, big time.

I can't give any blood. Reason being I'm highly alergic to alcohol. They
don't have betadine to clean with. So I can't give any of my own bloood
prior to surgery. By the way. My oncologist saw my pet and thought that the
small glow on the scan was nothing to be concerned about. I have had pet's
before. I disagreed with her and fired her. My colon surgeon found me a
liver spec/seurgeoan. he ordered the high res cat scan and look what we
found. He told me another 4-6 months I would have lost all of my liver and
would be most likely dead. I'm curerently looking for a new oncologist.

Thanks for explaining, Frank.
No thoughts of staying with the same oncologist ?; it's a learning lesson for
her and she already knows your challenges. (or at least, part of them).

I see your point now, Frank. I thought it was because she was unaware of the
high res cat scan.

Absolutely.

I guess we won't know until the surgeon gets in there (to see what's happening
and lab work) and gets you safely out of surgery.
I have no doubt that there's many excellent gastro surgeons in your country.
Another week to go and then you'll be in hospital being prepped.
I do wish you all my best.

Peter the cancer was Rectal Never colon. It burst througth the outer wall
into my rectum. It destroted my annus and the muscles and nerves that
controlled it.

Ah, Frank.  Your post reflects the road taken by my husband.  Even with
his history I could not venture to guess as to time. Only that your
time is limited.  In his case, the Avastin did cause a perforation of
the colon, and so he had TPN through a port for nourishment.  And a
massive infection behind the port seemed to be the last straw.  Because
of the Chemo his immune system was shot, and in spite of massive doses
of assorted types and strengths of antibiotics, he lost the battle.
He had skied the Swiss Alps in March.  I lost him in September.
I would advise that you get all your affairs in order while you can.
I wish you well,  I hope things are comfortable for you, and you get to
stay with us for a long time.  Blessings.
Frank - 24 Jul 2006 16:59 GMT
FRom all of you thanks. In your posts have been more sinscere and acurate
info in what I'm looking for. Doctors in general wouldn't give me any kind
of time frame. As I have stated I'm the oldest living Klinefeleter Syndrome
paitient here in N america. Most of US (KS'ers) die before 45. SO, I've bee
prepaprred top some extinct of my own mortality. I promiss to keep you all

Your doctors are right. They can't give a real time frame. You can look
a timeframe up on the internet, but that doesn't mean it will apply to
you. If doctors give a timeframe there are always people that say: "I
should be dead by now" or "doctor said 3 months and mom was dead within
2 weeks".

There are always tails in statistics for median survival but the right
time to take care of your affairs is now.
