Increased levels of transition metals in breast cancer tissue.
Ionescu JG, Novotny J, Stejskal VD, Lätsch A, Blaurock-Busch E,
Eisenmann-Klein M
Neuro Endocrinol Lett. 2006 Jun 28; 27(Suppl1):

OBJECTIVES: High levels of transition metals such as iron, nickel,
chromium, copper, and lead are closely related to free radical
generation, lipid peroxidation, formation of DNA-strand breaks, and
tumor growth in cellular systems. In order to determine the correlation
to malignant growth in humans, we investigated the accumulation of
heavy metals in 20 breast cancer biopsies and compared the findings to
the levels found in 8 healthy biopsies. METHODS: The concentration of
transition metals in breast cancer and control biopsies was assessed by
a standardized Atomic Absorption Spectrofotometry (AAS) technique with
acidic hydrolysis for sample preparation. Additionally, heavy metal
analysis in control biopsies was also performed with an Inductive
Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) technique. For statistical
analysis of the results, the Mann-Whitney U Test was applied. RESULTS:
A highly significant accumulation of iron (p<0.0001), nickel
(p<0.00005), chromium (p<0.00005), zinc (p<0.00001), cadmium (p<0.005),
mercury (p<0.005), and lead (p< 0.05) was found in the cancer samples
when compared to the control group. Copper and silver showed no
significant differences to the control group, whereas tin, gold, and
palladium were not detectable in any biopsies. CONCLUSIONS: The data
suggest that pathological accumulation of transition metals in breast
tissue may be closely related to the malignant growth process.

Co-supplementation of ferrous salts [iron] with vitamin C exacerbates
oxidative stress in the gastrointestinal tract, predisposing
individuals to ulceration, inflammatory disorders, and exacerbation of
existing chronic disorders and may cause cancer.

Iron and ascorbic acid form a potentially toxic cocktail. Ascorbic acid
has been shown to exhibit both anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant effects in
a dose related fashion. The chemical mechanisms given above have been
established demonstrating the potential for these compounds to interact
and oxidatively damage surrounding tissues. Even in healthy subjects a
positive or negative deviation from the optimal plasma ascorbic acid
level results in oxidative damage [23]. The detrimental effects of
large quantities of ascorbic acid and iron in healthy subjects and
patients with GI inflammatory diseases warrant further investigation.
In addition dietary supplements containing iron and ascorbic acid may
be deleterious as these components do not naturally come in
concentrated form (as in supplementation tablets).

What about moderately high levels of iron in well drinking water?

There is a *difference* between iron from ANY .. 'source' .. and the
iron found in meat / flesh / food.

Research has shown the iron in the body is controlled by .. absorption.

When we have enough iron 'on board' / stored iron .. we begin to
downregulate the PERCENTAGE of iron we absorb .. but .. the iron from
meat has been shown to be NOT .. controlled.

This leads to what is called age related iron accumulation.

The iron from water will not make a difference UNLESS you also eat meat
/ blood.

The iron from meat / flesh / blood has been shown to BIND to 'other'
iron ingested and causes it TOO to be upregulated in absorption.

Therefore .. high iron water is .. bad .. ONLY if you eat meat.

The high iron content of water has also been shown to allow pathogens
to SURVIVE in water by allowing the pathogen a ready SOURCE of iron.

Soooo .. the high iron content of water .. allows pathogens .. and if
one drinks the water .. WITH .. a high iron content in the body ..
would NOW allow the pathogen .. which REQUIRES iron .. to NOW .. 'take'
.. in the body and run and kill you .. or in the case of cancer ..
'feed' the cancer.

Then there is Nigel Hawthorne, British actor who play Sir Humphrey Appleby
in the comedy series Yes Prime Minister (among many other roles)- a
vegetarian who contracted pancreatic cancer.

Don't worry about it.  The body controls iron levels.  Ironjustice can
be ignored when it comes to any topic medical.

Iron Deprivation Treatment of Breast Cancer: Preclinical Studies
Authors: John D. Kemp; IOWA UNIV IOWA CITY

Abstract: Further progress has been made at the pre-clinical level in
the study of iron deprivation as a potential treatment modality for
breast cancer. The MDA-MB-231 cell line appears to be resistant to
combined treatment with HES-DFO and monoclonal antibodies against the
transferrin receptor; studies with the SK- BR-3 cell line are now under

way. Preliminary data suggest that 231 cells may cease dividing but not

undergo apoptosis when acutely deprived of iron; this is in contrast to

the findings with the 38C13 lymphoma. The possibility thus arises that
distinct gene activation pathways may occur in response to iron
deprivation. New data indicate that combined treatment may produce
supra- additive increases in serum IL-6 levels and thus offer further
support for the hypothesis that enhanced macrophage activation and an
augmented acute phase response play a role in the toxicity of iron
deprivation. New data also indicate that monoclonal antibodies against
the transferrin receptor inhibit lymphocyte activation in vivo. Further
