The name of the game at MD Anderson is wait. The information they sent
in advance suggested one bring a sweater and a book. DH actually
finished his book. Mine is a three-novel tome. Plenty of waiting room
time left.

I'll leave out all the unimportant stuff. We liked the young doc. He is
having me get a PET scan and see the dental people and the speech
people. After that, he'll prolly schedule with the chemo people.

He prefers that I have the radiation done at MDA. They are more able to
spot complications in the beginning to stop them than the locals. He
says prolly only 6 weeks. DH said okay. They promised me anti-anxiety
drugs for the radiation.

They will call with the scheduling, but it prolly won't happen until
next week.

We were there from 9:30 AM until almost 4 PM. Most of the time we were
just waiting.

That's all I know for now.

Janet,
Glad to hear it went Ok tho tedious.  At least you're both readers.
Does this mean you will just stay there 6 weeks without going home?

I think we will go home first for a bit. It doesn't appear that they can
schedule it that fast.  We didn't take enough personal meds and such to
stay more than 10 days. I will need to make different arrangements at
home if I'm to be gone that long.

Make sure that includes the time they make the mask.

Do not fear! They know. I was very upfront with all of my fears and had
a typed list of questions and concerns. The doctor said it was good that
I learned a lot of stuff on the internet, but I should use it as a
guideline and not assume that I would have all of the side-effects.

I talked to one of our RV neighbors last night. Her husband is being
treated at MDA. They are from Dallas and the docs there gave him a 10%
chance to live. MDA gave him 70%. She told me of a fellow who had just
left who had radiation to the whole side of his face and was told to
expect severe burns but never had any. That made me feel a whole lot better.

Yes! I like this doctor already.

A certain relative of mine knows exactly how that feels...

Glad you liked your doctor - that's a step in the right direction.
You're in the best place for you, so stop worrying - and buy your DH a
copy of War and Peace.  Or better still, the Lord of the Ring trilogy if
he hasn't read them, or even a dictionary or a train timetable.  The
latter two will be boring, but even so they'll be better than the
Tolstoy...

Em, who got as far as page 3 of W & P before giving up.

We hit the public library before we left. He had two more books in the
motorhome, neither of them are War and Peace or Lord of the Rings <g>

I don't know about TX, but in CO we can check out books from any library in
the state with our local card & also return them anywhere in the state.
You might see if you can use Houston libraries while you're there.  It's
handy for books on tape while traveling too.

Janet, you are on my prayer list and so is your family! MD Anderson was
one of the places our hospital suggested we go to (the others were Duke
University, and UCLA/Los Angeles) if the treatment that Ken got wasn't
going well.

Thank goodness he is doing great-all clear scans. I told him of how you
are having to pay so much money out in the hopes of re-imbursement and I
have always said "cancer is a money-maker"----as evidenced by the Cancer
Treatment Center ads that are blanketing local Atlanta television here.

I'm not going to disagree that there's money in it, just going to play the
devil's advocate. A cancer center is a really big investment of money and
personnel, and not the sort of thing that can be gradually assembled as
the clientele grows gradually, so if only to avoid losing money I'd
imagine a cancer center would still want to advertise.

Do many advertise?

One of our local hospitals here (Emory) has started blanketing local TV
here in Atlanta. Hubby said that if they spent "more time looking after
patients, they wouldn't have to advertise!"

We get the NYC networks in the RV on satellite and Hackensack Medical
Center is also advertising cancer services.

Our (well one) hospital spams us <g>
If we use the service, we either get a letter or phone call asking for
donations.

At least a few do. I believe the one that I see advertised most often is
Cancer Centers of America.

Great for him! Those Cancer Center commercials are on all the TV
stations. I can't believe the ads from supposedly "real" patients who
were "cured" at these centers.

Hugs,
Janet
