Hello Robert,
They've been tested on animals, but no high-quality trials have shown benefits
in humans.

Hi, Robert,

My husband took moderate quantities of milk thistle after he bagan chemo
for NSCLC.  Before taking the milk thistle, some of his liver values were
elevated from time to time, requiring a postponement of chemo. The
bulliruben levels were particularly problematic.  He had been a heavy
drinker & had been told to abstain from alcohol to keep his liver values
within range for chemo.  By taking the milk thistle, he was able to
reintroduce alcohol, but he still avoided drinking a few days before
chemo and a few days after.  His liver test results improved.  Recovery
time from chemo was shorter, despite the alcohol consumption.  Recovery
times tend to increase the longer you are on chemo.  In his case, they
were able to administer 10 treatments rather than the planned-for 6.  His
tolerance for chemo was seen as exceptional.  We cannot be sure how much
of a role the milk thistle played.  We do know that after he began taking
it, liver function improved when before, it had been deteriorating.

A friend with Hepatitis C was told by her doctor to take milk thistle
along with other medications.  She has been in remission for several
years. Her original prognosis was bleak.

My vet suggested I give my elderly cat milk thistle. His liver function
has improved since.

While there may not be conclusive evidence of how - or if -  this works,
some mainstream doctors have recommended taking it for liver problems.
Be sure to check with your oncologist before taking anything like this to
be certain it will not interfere with your treatment.  If no problem, it
might be worth trying.  It is not very expensive.  Then see how your
liver tests come out.

Some Costco stores carry it at the best price we found.  The ones where
we live do not, so we mail ordered it from them.

HTH,
Figgertoes
