Curt has been getting quite a bit of blood lately. (an oil change if he was
a car, 5 units this time) and we were having a pj party at the hospital.
picture: quiet room facing Mississippi River. Swans and ducks, geese during
the day. Daddy, Mommy and Trenton (5) it was nice.
anyway, we were talking about how the blood transfusions were definitely
quality of life stuff (his Hgb was 6.2 ) last transfusion 4 units Feb 9-10.
2 the Friday before that. So he is pretty much depleting our county Red
Cross of O+. I called the local Red Cross to see if we could help boost for
the next local bloodmobile. I'm from a small town 20 miles away and Curt has
well-connected friends here..
I am waiting to hear back. they seem to not have experienced this before. We
aren't trying to raise blood for Curt, we want to boost for everyone. I
myself am A-  6.5% f the pop.

just wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this and could
offer some advice.

TIA

Did I miss his blood type? Do they transfer/trade/barter/whatever blood from
one part of the country to another, i.e. if I gave here would it end up there?

I never said but he is O+

. a lady that works where he gets his carpet (yes, he is still doing a
little work when he has the strength) said she has 40 units banked and wants
him to have it. she is going to look into it.
I think blood donations are regional. I hope to hear back from them
tomorrow.

take care all

Lori,
I hear you say you don't want blood specifically for Curt. I don't know
the situation with your bloodbank.  I do know when I had my knee surgery
that the cost of the blood would have been a sizeable out-of-pocket
expense for me had I not self-donated in advance.  Insurance covered only
administering a transfusion, not the blood itself. Maybe your plan is
different.

When my mother had her kidney transplants in the 60s, they got lots of
press.  She had O- & they had to keep flying it in.  I was too young to
donate.  To our surprise, a union & all sorts of groups donated for her.
We weren't affiliated with the donor groups in any way. If Curt needs
donors, you might try any professional/trade associations he may be part
of or fellow employees.

We've found that people want to help.

Our blood bank here has ongoing drives.  Most companies bring them into
the office 1-2X/yr for employees to donate, & a mobile bank has regular
daily stops throughout the area.  If your community lacks that, you might
want to see about getting a program started.

I'm seeing this is a very tough time for you, so you might need to put
those ideas on hold while you deal with your very full plate, for now.

Hugs,
Fig

You could type your State into
http://groups-beta.google.com/advanced_search?q=&\
See which newsgroups (ignore one that has scient" in it).

Post OT - Have you given blood lately?
State your situation briefly ( asbelow) and that many other people could benefit
(shortages).
Give the gift of life - give blood on a regular basis.

If nobody yells at you, you could maybe post once a week. if you're able to.

my newsreader says there's 13 newsgroups with minnesota in it, if that's where
you are.
There's more than 12 ".mn" newsgroups
If you're going to crosspost, no more than 4 newsgroups at a time.
Word sometimes spreads that way.

I'd just print up flyers and put them around town. word of mouth (small town
gossip) call the local paper, etc. that would be a way for people to feel
like they are doing something to help. We'd probably get a few hundred
people.
they raised $4800 for Curt at his golf course and none of my friends/family
even knew about it so that's a whole bunch more people who didn't get to
help before.

So he feels better again and the dang nose bleed comes back again!
