Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's primary fundraising
event. In 2004 alone, Relay raised over 9 million dollars for cancer
research. NYU's Relay for Life last year was highly successful, raising
over $150,000 alone. This year, the goal has been set at $200,000.

The idea behind Relay is that teams of 10-15 people are formed, who
fundraise together. At the actual event, which is held in a gym, there
will always be at least one member from each team on the track over the
24 hour period, symbolic of the constant vigilance we must take in
regards to cancer.

One of the staples of Relay is the luminarias, which are candles in
bags that bear the name of somebody who currently has cancer, has
survived, or passed away. At the actual event, they are lit all around
the track, and all the survivors join together on the Survivor's
Victory Lap.

However, because it is based at a college, NYU does not recieve a high
survivor turnout. This is disappointing because the survivors are truly
the heart and soul of the event: evidence of the power of hope, and the
promise of the future.

We would love to have more survivors, their family, friends, and
caretakers come. Please let us know if you would be willing to
participate in special survivor activities, such as the Victory Lap.

You do not have to be part of a team to participate as a survivor.
However, if you would like to be part of an NYU alumni team, we will
gladly form one for you/you and your friends can form one!

The event is held at the Jerome Coles Sports Center, 181 Mercer Street,
New York, NY 10006.
