Tobacco companies did elaborate research on women to figure out how to
hook them on smoking - even toying with the idea of chocolate-flavored
cigarettes that would curb appetite, according to a new analysis.

Researchers at Harvard University's School of Public Health said they
examined more than 7 million documents - some dating back to 1969,
others as recent as 2000 - for new details about the industry's efforts
to lure more women smokers.

Carrie Carpenter, the study's lead author, said companies' research
went far beyond a marketing or advertising campaign.

"They did so much research in such a sophisticated way," she said.
"Women should know how far the tobacco industry went to exploit them."

The report, published in the June issue of the journal Addiction, says
tobacco companies looked for ways to modify their cigarettes to give
women the illusion they could puff their way into a better life.

I am sure you guies got interested to know more about this. what's the
idea of visiting this site on this and some more where they are
discussing.

Some horrified information >>>>>:-

"Secondhand smoke kills as many as 62,000 Americans annually from heart
disease." (CalEPA, 1997)".

"Measurements of the carbon monoxide (CO) concentration at a cigar
party and a cigar banquet in a restaurant showed indoor CO levels
comparable to those measured on a crowded California freeway."

"Some 88% of the non-smoking U.S. population has cotinine (indicator of
exposure to tobacco smoke) in their blood." (Pirke et al., 1996).

Tobacco smoke is as dangerous to non-smokers as firsthand smoke is to
smokers themselves. The EPA has classified tobacco smoke (containing 43
carcinogens) as a Class A carcinogen - a known cause of human cancer.

The detrimental health effects of exposure to environmental tobacco
smoke (ETS) are well documented and include lung cancer and coronary
heart disease among adults, low birth weight and sudden infant death
syndrome from exposure during and after pregnancy, and asthma,
bronchitis and pneumonia in children. The EPA estimates that for
between 200,000 and one million asthmatic children, exposure to
secondhand smoke worsens their condition. Secondhand smoke can make
healthy children less than 18 months of age sick; it can cause
pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, coughing, wheezing, and
increased mucus production. According to the EPA, secondhand smoke can
lead to the buildup of fluid in the middle ear, the most common cause
of hospitalization of children for an operation.

*Estimates*???  For pity's sake, how much did they spend of public
money, just to tell people that?  I've had asthma since childhood and I
could have given them that information for free.

Here's another little gem that they might like to consider: /Any/
pollutants in the air can give asthmatics problems; not just tobacco
smoke.  Let's try heavy traffic, fog, too hot, too cold, bonfire
smoke... we've known that smoke inhalation is a bigger risk than the
actual fire for /decades/.  I'm waiting for the UK to finally ban
smoking in public places; I'm waiting for the authorities to impose
heavy penalties for so doing.  While I'm waiting, I'd like the US to
finally admit (officially) that they're major contributors to global
warming (with more pollutants that reach the UK shores after just a few
days crossing the Pond) and I'd like the UK to make it easier for me to
use biodiesel in my car.  I say, did you see that blue moon?  There'll
be a flying pig next...

I try to be a good example to my children, but they just see me as a
dire warning.
