A big problem with my BIL is constipation.  Any hints will be appreciated.
Also he is tachying along in sinus tach, and has a low BP.  My sis is going
to ask for blood work as we both believe he probably has a low hemoglobin.
His mentation is not the best right now.  She did not tell me about
cyanosis, and I think if he had that she would have said so.  If he has a
low hemoglobin it is probably from not making blood, right?  She has seen no
obvious signs of bleeding.  Is there any way to boost this?  It is difficult
to get him to eat.

My wife is a nurse and used to take care of AIDS patients.  She said they
were very sick and did not want to eat.  One of the doctors bought a blender
for the floor and they made the patients milk shakes and smoothie type
drinks.  She said the patients liked those and did drink via a straw.  I
guess they liked the cool drink and it was easy on their stomach.  I suppose
you could put supplements in the mix or maybe a V8 kind of drink to get some
nutrients in there and not just empty calories.

Hope that helps some.  Good luck to you.

Can anyone give some advice, my husband had seed implants (Paladium 103) 3
weeks ago, two weeks ago he started having pains in his bottom and penis,
this happens when he needs to urinate and goes away after, he is also
urinating about every 30 minutes, he is getting really low in himself and I
am worried, would appreciate any advice
Thank you

I am only a surgeon with no experience of this method, but I think you must
check with the radiation oncologist.   The symptoms may merely be due to the
radiation starting to do its job, but "going" so often is terribly wearing.
There may be treatment that can help or complications that need excluding.
What did the oncologist tell him to expect?

Others here may have had the treatment and have experience to share.

These symptoms are not uncommon after implants, but usually occur earlier.
He may have a an infection, but you really need to get the advice of the
oncologist who is treating him

You need to talk to the doctor.  Seems to me that I have read here that
there are medications that they can give to help with the frequent
urination.  Ask about that specifically.

97 paladium-103 seeds last September.  Your husband is pretty much
on track but there's some info missing.

They surely asked him some questions before the seeding, How often
does he pee; does he get up at night to pee; easy starting and
stopping; that sort of thing.  The better off he was before, the
better he should be doing now.

Before seeding, I never got up to go at night.  I could write my
name in wet concrete at 5 feet.  I was essentially a perfect score
pre-seeding.

Post-seeding, the worse was at about 3 weeks, not 2,  I was getting
up to pee 3 and 4 times a night.  I had to go, really go every hour
during the day.  There was some "stinging".

After 4 weeks, I started sleeping about an hour longer each month.
By the 4th or 5th month, I was sleeping through the night.

I was on Flomax for 6 months.  Decadron for 2 or 3 weeks.  And one
Aleve, to reduce the swelling of the prostrate and urethra for 6
months.  I started with 3 Aleve at the 3 week mark when they tapired
off the Decadron.

I reduced the Aleve as I started feeling better.

I gotta say though, this was not a major inconvenience.  I have a
desk about 20 feet from the men's room.  At the worse of it, I was
getting up to "dribble" about once an hour or so.   A 5 minute break
once an hour, no one even noticed.

My office is a 30 minute commute.  I made a pit-stop before leaving
and when I got there and never had to pull over and run for the
trees.

By the 2nd month, I was good for 2 hours during the day.

At nine months, I'm off all the meds.  There's a little stinging
while peeing.

Good luck.  You'll find it very easy, actually relaxing.  SEs are manageable
and there are things you can do to minimize them.  So enjoy your weekend.

There's a booklet here called "Choices".
http://www.phoenix5.org/resources/choices/choicesmenu.html
It's availaile online in html, in PDF format or by ordering it from Molly.
Ignore the first 4 emails there. Robert and Berky have passed away. Robert's
wife left the web page up for ongoing information, but I guess she hasn't
updated it.

Hopefully Molly's email is still valid. If you find out that Molly's still
sending out booklets, please let us know.

There are some medicines that can boost the blood counts but I think that's only
temporary especially if he's on chemotherapy and/or the cancer's in the bone
(which it is).

Steve K sometimes answers questions about advanced cancer on the prostate cancer
newsgroup, but many of the others don't have the information. They're at the
beginning of their journey of diagnosis and treatment issues.
So if you've got advanced cancer questions, it's probably best to either post
them separately or post them here on alt.support.cancer.

If by mentation you mean he's not thinking straight, that can be the cancer or
the treatments, but you've not given us his treatment info.

If he's being taken in for bloodwork, maybe she can get a prognosis
(guesstimate) from the doctor or opinion as to whether it's time for hospice
help at home.

Hopefully Mike Radcliffe will be back with us soon. He often answers advanced
cancer questions.
Let us know how he makes out with the bloodwork and any updates, as availabe.
Best,
J
