You and Betty have been on my mind all week.
Thinking of you.

Thank you all for your concerns. On Sat the admitting doc suggested
that I call in the family which I did. They said that they were going
to give Betty a massive dose of the med steroid that we started her on
Thurs.By Sat the family started to arrive and Betty had regained her
voice although she did not recognize everyone. By Sun the drug seemed
to be working and she was a little more cognizant of everything. They
had told me on admitting because of the extensive cancer in the brain
that they thought that radiation was not an option. The doc checked
with the radiologist and they said that they could do some radiation
that could give her some more time and quality of life.On Mon they
were going to transport her to Victoria and begin radiation. I had an
appointment in 2 weeks for my own cancer check up so I changed the
date and made arrangements to stay at the lodge in Victoria.Friday at
4 pm the nurse told me that the date had been changed to the following
week and I barely caught the appointment sect to change my appointment
back to where it was but I missed the lodge but left a message. This
means a delay in radiation for one week for Betty and the delay is
very worry some. Betty is very confused but seems very happy and is
not in any pain.
One son has gone home and the other will go home Sun. My three
daughters will be here until the middle of next week. Then I can have
my house back but will have no one to stay at the hospital.
Betty has real ups and downs during the day.For a short time she
seems alert and then she loses it for a while and rests.Neices friends
and grandchildren have all popped in to see her and some have traveled
a thousand miles to be here for a short visit. I try to limit them to
a few minutes each alone with her and I know that in a short time I
will be her only visitor.
The nurses do not seem to realize how confused Betty is and have
left her medication on her table. Betty does not know enough to take
her medicine and does not know how to eat properly. She has a voracious
appetite but does not know how to use her utensils properly so she
needs help with them. When I came into her room yesterday she was busy
standing beside her bed brushing her teeth although she had no
toothpaste or water. My daughter took her to the bathroom and helped
her and then helped with the toilet. She needs help there as well and
seems to not know when she has to go.They did an ultra-sound on her
kidneys and said everything was ok there.
So there is the update and for anyone who read this far I thank you.

Thank you Gordo for taking the time.
I read every bit of it (3 times).
I sure wish that Steph could pull some strings, but (I could be wrong), I
think he's away.
(no posts from him since the 8th, so I was hoping he'd be back this
weekend).
Perhaps that's part of the reason they could not get Betty in on Monday.
Besides, you'd have to (last minute) switch your own doctor's appointment
again and lodging arrangements, right?
It's good that family got there while she's having some alert times. There
may be some fatigue from the radiation so she may be sleeping a little bit
more. I think they say the worst kicks in around the 2-week after point.
This could give you a bit of a break if she sleeps more.
It's a big job and only you know all her wants and needs. Is there a
"hospice" wing in that hospital? Or is that where she is?
Something to look into. Another; can you ask them to put a recliner
beside her bed, so you can snooze while she's snoozing.
They were willing to do that for us when we were out there for Dad. I
forget if they offered or we had to ask. I expect they're busy or one
thinks the other took care of such.
I'm sure it's lovely having "the clam" all visit Betty, but sounds rather
hectic for you though.
Hopefully things will settle in a bit by Monday and more after Wednesday,
even though you're losing one helpful daughter.
Hang in there Gordo, get some rest as you can, but do check in, in case
Steph shows up and has a comment.
Best,
J

I ditto Sinead's thoughts Gordo. It can be an overwhelming time for you,
you are doing fantastic but you can't take on the entire role on your own
without needing a breather to recharge your own batteries.
Warm Hugs to you and Betty.

Hello Gordo,
Perhaps you've been catching up on sleep and staying with Betty more.
My thoughts are with you both.
When you have time, looking for an update.
Is radiation therapy still on?
