I recently saw the eye doctor due to a strange spot on the white of my eye.
He said it is most likely a Pingueculum, (which is a totally benign
condition).
But, he gave me some drops and wants to see me in 3 weeks. He wants to see
if the drops don't whiten the eye (or something like that).
He said it could be cancer (remote possibility) so I MIGHT need a biopsy.
This of course is scary. Hopefully he will be able to look at it again and
indicate that it is the Pingueculum and no biopsy is needed. I've done a
lot of internet browsing about this and they don't seem to mention biopsies
with these lesions, so I would assume it is usually clear what it is.
Does anyone know anything about this. More specifically, what does a biopsy
entail (is it just a quick scrape with a needle or is it something more
extensive; the lesion appears to me to be obviously on the surface). Also,
what kind of prognoses are there for eye cancer (I am pretty sure if it is
cancer it would NOT be a melanoma but it could certainly be a squamous
cell).

Almost certainly benign.
Squamous cancer of the conjunctiva is pretty rare. Usually a small surgery
to remove it is all that's required.
Don't panic

Thanks so much Steph. That means a lot coming from you as your replies
are always so honest and on target (ie: if the prognosis is bad you
have never hesitated to honestly relay that information)!
