Hello All

I am recently ( 2 months ago) been diagnosed with colorectal cancr and
goiving for radiotherapy and chemotheropy next week followed by big
operation, to remove the infected part along with surrounds.

I am not sure what to do, it is scary but looks like only option to me?

Is there any one here faced the same problem or know of some one I really
appreciate your help.

Regards

Yousaf

Hello Yousaf and welcome to alt.support.cancer

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

There are others here with colorectal cancer.

Yours must be rectal cancer, yes?  And first they're shrinking the tumour and
then you'll be having surgery, yes?

I'm sure it is scarey but know that there are other survivors here and on the
ACOR private mail list
at http://www.acor.org/mailing.html
Select "C" for colon and "join" .  Then they will send you a confirmation
email that it's okay to send and receive messages from other members there.
There's currently almost 800 members on the ACOR colon maillist.
When you send a message there or posting here, it's helpful to tell us the
staging information on your cancer and your country.
Is it UK?

Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.
If you have questions, we also have a radiation oncologist here, (Steph).
No colorectal surgeon though, as far as I know.
But between the two resources, I'm sure they'll try to reassure you, that's
it's been done before with success.
So keep a positive outlook and keep in touch with us here.
Best wishes,
J

Yousaf, I made a mistake (in my other reply).
I think you won't know the staging information until after the surgery, so
don't worry about giving us that information for now.
Sorry about that.

Yousaf,

I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer more than a year ago, and am well on
the road to recovery.   It is scary, and things look pretty bad at first, but
there is hope.

First tell us whatever questions you have, be as specific as possible and we
will do what we can to support you.

My cancer was low and involved the rectum.   Before having surgery I had
several weeks of chemo and radiation in order to shrink the tumor as much as
possible before surgery.   It gives the best options for saving as much of
your plumbing as possible.

I was staged at Stage 4, but like I said, I made it.   All the best.

Hello Yousaf,
It is scary, but don't lose hope. Here is one of many stories you'll
read on a.s.c.: last year my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal
cancer. Your treatment plan sounds very much like his. Baz had a combined
course of chemotherapy and radiation for about five weeks (yours, of course,
might differ). This was to reduce the tumour's size prior to surgery.
Although we were very scared about the surgery, he recovered fairly quickly
and returned to chemo for three months. He completed that on Feb 9th, and
he's recovering very well.
You've done a good thing in joining this group. When Baz was first
diagnosed, he pretty much didn't want to know about anything. I came here to
get information, read stories, and communicate in general. You'll find many
sympathetic people who have very similar experiences who will be happy to
share stories and suggestions with you. This, I think, can't be
underestimated. Know that others are thinking of you and and are here to
support you.
Also, you might ask your doctors if there is a local support group for
people who are undergoing treatment. Baz resisted doing this after he was
diagnosed, but he finally relented and joined such a group in November--and
he's kicking himself for not joining earlier. Even though he knew he wasn't
the only person in the world who had cancer, he felt very lonely and kind of
isolated. Meeting others who are in a similar situation can be very
beneficial.
    My thoughts are with you.
    All the best,
    Morgs

Hello Yousaf
I am in the same situation as you, I was diagnosed 10th January and am
going to see the oncologist about radiotherapy next week.I have also had a
second opinion about the surgery I will require as I was told I would need
a permanent stoma. My tumour is too close to the anus about 4cm so I have
no alternative but to have a permanent stoma. However, it seems many people
live full lives with one. I am worried also it was especially bad when I
first found out but I got good advice here from a number of people. I am
just trying to not think too far ahead and try to take one step at a time.
I have though read as much as I can so I can understand what is
happening. There is a charity called colon cancer concern that allows you to
speak to a specialist nurse if you have any
questions.http://www.coloncancer.org.uk/

Hello Yousaf:

You've made an excellent choice by coming to this newsgroup. I've been
reading posts here for about a year now since I was diagnosed with
stage 4 CRC, and have gotten a lot of support and valuable
information. No one knows like those who've been there too. Don't be
afraid to ask questions here. There are even some medical people who
hang out here who can be helpful.

And don't be afraid to contribute. We're all in this together, so your
experience can be helpful to others too.

You'll find stories of cure and non-cure here. But all will be stories
of courage and compassion for others.

I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in May of 2003.

I had chemo and radiation to shrink the tumor foloowed by surgery.  The
surgeon made an ileostomy and a j-pouch to creat a new rectum since my
old rectum was removed.  At that time they found that it was a stage 3.

I had more chemo following the surgery.  Then in March of 2004 the
ileostomy was reversed.

I'm as good as new now.

Just recently I started training for my first triathlon and I am having
a great time. I'll be 40 this year and enjoying every minute of it.

Hang in there, while still a scary disease, some cancers are beatable
these days.

Good luck,
Stephanie

PS: About that triathlon I am doing with team in training.  I am not
going to use this forum to try to raise funds for the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society, but if somebody would like to donate to the cause,
please e-mail me directly. Thanks.
