Since its inception in 1992, this newsgroup has had its share of ups and
downs. It may be a good time to reflect on the original post that opened
the group, and ask yourself these questions: Are you contributing to the
ups or the downs? Is this where ekman (Crossly) would want the newsgroup to
be 12+ years later? What can you do to keep the group on track?

Welcome to alt.support.cancer, a support group for cancer patients
and their families and loved ones.  The intent of the group is to
provide a forum for interested persons to exchange experiences,
thoughts, and suggestions related to: coping strategies, which are
probably different for patients than for those close to them;
alternative treatments, both within and without the range of
conventional medicine; available options for care of terminal
patients; other related subjects as general interest may suggest.

Just to get things started, I have Stage D prostatic cancer, 'Stage D'
meaning that it has metastasized to other sites, specifically the lymph
nodes.  A combination of radiation therapy and drugs--Lupron and
Flutamide' appears to have brought it in check, at least for the moment.
Of course each time I get an new ache or pain, I worry that it means
that it has metastasized to the bone.

These drugs seem to have a side effect of encouraging production of
excess uric acid.  I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience with
them.

Before I get flamed, I'm not trying to start anything controversial.  I
just got back from beginning to clean out my dear uncle's apartments
and I'm very, very tired.

I just thought it interesting that the original "charter" of the group
included alternative treatments yet posters are currently attacked for
wanting to discuss them.

I'm also amazed at what's gone on while I've been gone.  Can't we just
ignore posts we don't like?  Why does anyone have to leave?  Everyone
contributes in their own way and should be welcome here.

All this voting garbage is just that.  Guess I'm glad I missed it.  Of
course, I notice that since I've been NED for a few years, I didn't
"qualify" to vote anyway...

Just amazing.

No flames from me, my flamethrower is in the shop for repairs.

The problem is the alt med (oxymoron) lunatics that frequent the NG. If you
discuss PHP (which is a funny but unproven treatment), it then will invite
discussions about iron, noni juice, etc... The group then spends more time
going around in circles with worthless remedies than they do with cancer
support issues. It is doubtful that ekman would have foreseen the explosion
in medical fraud lunatics that would attempt to takeover the group.
Recently a few on the group have made an effort to curb that takeover. Of
course, anything can be overdone.

If someone comes along that exhibits troll like behavior, the result will
be chaos in the NG. It is human behavior, which is difficult to control.
The best antidote is plonking.

Nobody should leave. Everyone should get along.

Everyone that contributes is welcome. The disagreement is with *what is a
contribution*.

I believe the purpose of that cancer exclusion was to leave a few
professionals out of the melee. The issue of voting someone in or out is a
bad idea that cannot be implemented. We all know who contributes to the
group and who does not, so no action is necessary by anyone other than the
individual reading the group.
