It's been a while since we heard from you.
There are three main types of cells in your blood: white cells, red cells and
platelets.
Platelets help the blood to clot, so that heavy bleeding does not occur when
you
cut or hurt yourself.
When there are not enough platelets in the blood, you may bruise or bleed
easily
Platelets, which are also called thrombocytes, are actually fragments of cells
called megakaryocytes.
The body uses platelets in the clotting process to plug holes in leaking blood
vessels.
Hopefully that answers your question.
I have a concern about you. I hear that AOL will stop newserver service this
month.
Have you made plans for a new newsserver and newsreader?
(there's another post that explains where to get a free newsserver, then
decision
about newsreader has to be made, downloaded, installed, set up (settings) and
at
the ready for when AOL stops their news service.

From Anna,
Hi J, Wasn't sure this post would be posted after getting the message about
the newsgroups. Don't know what I'll do if they stop having them on AOL. I
get good info from you all here. I hate when AOL changes things. When they
decide to make things easier for those with better computers and forget about
the rest of us. Even if we are just a few. Dad is doing ok. The combination
of chemo, Valcade and steroids is working. His protein count is slowly
dropping so he wasn't to upset about having to skip having the chemo today.

Hi Anna, it's good to read that your Dad's doing okay.

Hello Anna,
Well there's quite a few (on various other newsgroups) who are busily changing
newsreaders (and have been for weeks now), so it's best to get moving. I've got an
"oldie" computer too (comparatively speaking).
Do you have the details about your computer?
What system is running on it? Version of Windows? 3.1? Win95/97 or ??
Hard Drive space? RAM ? (memory) MHz? (speed) Does it have a dialup modem?
In the meantime, in case AOL pulls the plug soon, please copy and save these in a text
file.
Start, Menu, copy and paste into Notepad or Wordpad
This is how some AOL'ers (and others) have accessed newsgroups (through Google - it's a
newsreader and server but rather klutsy to use), but in an emergency or from remote
(other) computers can be accessed for free.
http://groups-beta.google.com/advanced_search?q=& (then sort by date) and type
alt.support.cancer into the newsgroup box.
(try it and you'll see the most recent posts first). Save/bookmark the result, so you
can pull it back up with the next most recent results.
By trying to reply to a post, it will ask for you for a signin and password, which you
would have to set up and then wait for their confirm email that you've been signed up.
This is a free news server
http://news.individual.net/
Both require signing up (registration).
The latter requires a newsreader.
So in theory, you could continue using AOL for other AOL sites and emails.
then you could use a browser and newsreader such as Mozilla or if your computer can
only handle small programs, there's could be Netscape 4.XX. That's what I've been
using for years. It's not perfect but it works.
Other factors to consider:
I assume you pay AOL for service? I don't know if their cost will lower, if they're
stopping "newsgroups". Do you know?
Could you afford an ISP ? If you decided to discontinue AOL totally? And use a
different combined email and newsreader (and browser).
There are many choices. There's even webtv. My understanding is limited, but I think
it's one charge and one can watch TV or switch over to computer (and email or
newsgroups or browsing), but I don't think it has a hard drive. So do you have saved
stuff on your computer? If so, webtv probably isn't a good choice.
Lots to think about. If you need help sorting out what computer system you have, I'm
hoping you have a friend. neighbour or relative who can be there and look (not do
anything), just look on your computer and you write down the computer specs.
If you had same who's a real whiz at computers AND does newsgroups, perhaps they can
help you make the right decision for you and not muck up your computer in the process.
Let us know

A friend of mine uses a newsreader with her AOL account. The
way Google is currently screwing up NG posts is dire.

This news server can take a few days to get the registration back. It does
not do binaries; if you want to post pictures or view newsgroups that
contain images there is no access to those newsgroups.

There are a lot of newsreaders available for MAC
http://www.newsreaders.com/mac/clients.html
or
If you only use support groups Support Talk is free

I don't have a lot of current experience with MACs. I was wondering if
someone in the NG has MAC experience and is willing to help others if they
have problems changing news clients or servers? I can help AOL users that
run Windoze 95/98/ME/2000/XP. If you need help start a new thread on the
NG.

It repeats our posts but puts ads in the middle of the messages..

They're also replaying the breast cancer newsgroup.
The ads are subject sensitive and powered by Google.
For instance, "foot rash" thread, has ads for rash treatments
FAQ thread has (and these are clickable links).

Well, I'm not referring people there (for the reasons that I later posted).
they make their web page look "busy" by copying posts from here. And it's got too much
advertisement.
(No different than posting through Google, but newsreader is the way to go, IMO)
I'll not be adding it to the list of "other resources"
FYI, and FWIW

J,
I have used Support Talk to get archive info, as they show up on Google web
searches. I have Pop-ups and advertising blocked so I do not see most of
it, and the rest I can easily ignore. I am very focused when looking for
information.
I agree, newsreader clients are the way to go.
BTW, if there are any people left with problems finding a client or server,
please start a new thread and I will try my best to help resolve your
problems. (Disclaimer - I have not used a MAC in many years so I am not the
best choice if you are running MAC OS. I will try to get you to someone
that can help.)

I am on a mac, so I may be able to answer questions.

Different news servers offer different subsets of usenet news groups. First
you have to find a free server that has the groups that you regularly
access.
http://freenews.maxbaud.net/
Then, get a news reader. I strongly recommend xnews. It is free, stable,
has exceptionally good kook filters, and isn't a Microsoft product. Best
of all, I won't feel rejected and unloved as I would be if you failed to
unerringly heed my advice on all things technical.
Obtain it at http://xnews.newsguy.com Unless you like playing with beta
releases, get the production version, which is v5.04.25 That's assuming
that you are running a windows box. if you're on linux, knode comes with
the kde desktop on any distro that includes kde.
