My lady is having a bad reaction to doxil.
The treatment is going to be changed but right now she is in misery due
rash and pain in the feet triggered by Doxil.
Any ideas (hopefully from experience) on things we can do to lessen the
pain?

TIA

I know from experience these side effects can be extremely debilitating and
uncomfortable. I spent 2 weeks not being able to walk any further than from
lounge chair to bed to loo. It is called Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia.
This link has some ideas http://www.cancerlynx.com/doxil.html but I found
putting my feet (and hands) in cool water and using icepacks was most
effective for me. I also had a cool shower twice a day, and didnt use any
soap, but rather a soothing lotion/cleanser. Applying soothing creams worked
for about 5 minutes (I found them of little value).
With me, once my feet and hands started to peel, the pain went almost
immediately.
My thoughts are with your lady as I know how extremely uncomfortable this
can be.

This is going to sound a little weird, but I used Bag Balm - available at
most animal feed stores.   The lanolin in a heavy base was soothing and there
is a triple antibiotic to help prevent infection.   I used several pair of
heavy cushioned athletic socks and put on a good coat [the socks will be a
total loss, so don't use your best ones].   Anyway that is what worked for
me.

How long did it take to go away after the Doxil was last given?
If Sam could reply also please.

LB it took me about 4 weeks to be fully functional again and without any
pain what so ever, but about 8 weeks for all the skin to lift and peel. My
skin still tends to be drier that prior to treatment.
About the bag balm... I have heard lots of people use that with great
success, but unfortunately I was unable to find it or a similar product here
in Australia.
I know how your lady is feeling and when I was experiencing the red painful
symptoms it felt like it was never going to end. I might add my husband
telling me that time will fix it and that I had to be patient (as advised by
my oncologist) made me want to punch his lights out!! (I've never been a
'good' patient)

Not wierd at all, Bag Balm has been discussed here before. It is a
veterinary product, but some people use it on baby butts with no ill
effects--aside from the smell and greasy consistency. You might find it in
the pet section of Wal-Mart.
