...but it's pouring for mother right now.  She had to go back
to hospital this morning but luckily they gave her medication
and sent her home.  She says:

"I went back to the hospital today as I have one eye very
swollen.  I now have a 3rd antibiotic,  aimed at cellulitis,
and staph infection.  My left arm is inflamed above the drip
lines.  Face not a pretty sight.  Eye swelled overnight."

Poor ol' mother.

: (( http://www.arches.uga.edu/~keprice/staph.html not good 'Em.
Staph lives on our skin and gets in through openings (sores, cuts,
surgeries, sometimes boils).
Did they give her instructions as to hygiene?
I'm no expert, but she has to keep her hands away from the area and use
antibacterial wipes on her hands before touching any open area. And
possibly use those wipes on everything she touches, doorknobs, flushers,
faucets, phone, etc. else she may keep spreading it around (back to
herself) and if it's "weeping" pus, even more so.  Nail brush for under
the nails but not vigorous enough to break the skin.  Keep nails trimmed,
so nails can't scratch her. Was her tooth looked at? (in case it's
infected?)

If she goes to visit or you go there, ditto on the "high-alert hygiene"
for everyone.  Otherwise the antibiotics won't have a chance to zap it.
(is my understanding)...

Sending healing thoughts that this too will pass.
Hugs

Update, in response to J's advice re hygiene with staph
infection and suchlike:

25th December 2004
"I do know about hygiene thanks.  Antibiotics kicking in now.
Thanks for advice.  Can see to type this.  Arm warm, not hot.
Face still swollen but that is surgery effect.
Em's Mum"

26th December 2004
"Swelling going down and eye much better"

Mother doesn't understand about setting up news accounts and
the like, and won't listen to a word I say about such things
(I'm only her daughter, so what would I know?), so it's
unlikely in the extreme that she'll ever post here herself.
She does, however, seem to appreciate the care of the NG here
even if she's not interested in joining in, so I'll relay
messages as and when required.  Had to giggle a bit back
though - she rang me to tell me she'd emailed me, even though
she knows that I check my email several times a day :-)

hrmph..so she knows everything does she? :-)
I posted that for you not her (to watch out in case she mentioned details
that leaned toward bigger problems.
Sounds like she's improving. That sounds good.

A friend of mine's daughter was calling her mother to ask if she'd
recieved her email. I think the problem was she expected to get a
responseback immediately.<smile>

Just for once she probably didn't mean it quite like that.
Note the 'just for once', however <g>

Aye, she'll carry on for a good few more years I should think.
The problem with mother is that she's one of those people who
seems to have been born middle aged and with apparently very
limited thinking skills.  It can make her extremely irritating
at times.

Not only did mother phone me to tell me she'd emailed; she
then proceeded to explain to me what was actually /in/ said
email!

LOL, gad, she's funny.   But I'm not there. If someone did that to me, I'd be
rolling my eyes upward .
maybe it's a good thing that she doesn't know how to set up news accounts..
We can have chuckles about her w/o worrying that she's reading over our
shoulders.
And then...
.
.
.
.
.
.
one day we could click on the newsgroup and see her here giving you/us
"whatfor" for chuckling about her.
Thanks for the laughs, Em.

I did exactly that; my husband sitting opposite me knew who I
was talking to and gathered from my end of the conversation
what was going on.  He had to clean his keyboard afterwards to
remove the beer :-)
