series of tests

Starting next Wednesday I get mt 1st thyrogen injection.
And then the same day go for a CT & Sonography.
Thursday 2nd injection of thyrogen, then a resting
EKG, followed w/ holter monitor w/ interp.
Friday blood test and then radioactive iodine, for
a whole body scan on Monday.

I have found a couple of lumps on neck, problem
sleeping, breathing. Food getting stuck in throat,
back of tongue feeling swollen, congestested.
Waking w/ headaches-more like the hangover type,
minus the alcohol the night before. Feeling of being
light -headed, not lasting more than a minute.

Just wondering if this is more thyroid related or
heart related? Comb. of the two?

Recurrent diesease?

I had the thyrogen injections last year, nothing
showed up.

Is it possible that this surveillance for thyroid cancer
will not show diesease, even if it's present?

Why after 9 years would a person body make
antibodies, when none were present before?

And is this over kill on the tests?

Thanks for any idea's.

With the exception of the lump, This sounds like my reaction to
RT of Left Lung and whole brain.

Hi Jill, doesn't sound like overkill on the tests (to me).
You may have some sleep apnea going on there.
I can't remember if all your thyroid tissue was surgically removed.
If so, and there's antibodies, sounds to me like there's more/leftover
active thyroid tissue (antibodies).
(but I'm not an expert on any of this).
Cancerour or not, I don't know.
Unless someone else knows, you're best asking your doctors.
I'll be thinking of you this week, Jill.
Many hugs

J,
I've had a TT & 2 mega doses of RAI & radical neck
dissection.
The Doc always says let do these test first, never
what to geuss either.
He thinks it could have something to do w/ the heart.
The holter monitor should tell them.
I always ask a lot of questions and then I try and find
someone else to ask.
Thanks J.

Hi Jill, how's it going?
I've had the halter monitor before. Was wondering if they found anything?
I forget if one is unwell after RAI, so I didn't want to bug you too much.

Did you have to stop your thyroid meds?
Keep in touch, as you are able.

As the hubby says, finer than frog hair.
Got tired of going to the hospital, it's an
hour and 40 min.  trip ( if it's not rush hour)

The CT showed some nodules, but have to
wait for the Dr. to tell me.

The EKG didn't show anything and I'm still
waiting on the results from the holter moniter.
The tech. did say if the holter didn't show
anything, they would do a few other tests.

The thyrogen injection are, so you don't have
to withdrawl from your thyroid meds for a month.
Which I do very poorly if off meds that long.
Makes Jill a little crazy .

RAI dose I recieved Fri. was only enough for
the whole body scan on Monday. It's not like
the dose they give you to try and destroy  thyroid
cancer.

I was out raking the yard, so many leaves.
I think it will take me till spring to get them all.
I have a pile in the front yard as tall as me.
And not one kid has jump in it, well I geuss I'll
have to do it.

Big hugs to my little J bug.

hee, hee... I missed the boat last night in two ways,
I raked some leaves, then forgot to jump in them.
I normally don't rake. I use the lawnmower to mulch them, they fertilize the
lawn.
I forgot about the time change here (fall back) so I was "lawn mowing" at 10:30
at night.
I'm betting the neighbours were wondering about me ;-)

You make me laugh. My neighbors most likely think
I'm a little bent too. My one neighbor would wait like
four days after I mowed (push, Jill propelled) and then
mow, so it would make my yard look like it needed it.

Mind you, I have a 80X 140(deep) yard.

So did I mow again, you bet.

So now they thinking look at that fool raking leaves,
if we wait a few days, our leaves will be in her yard.

Sheesh !  The nerve of them to make your yard look unkemp. <smile>

> Mind you, I have a 80X 140(deep) yard.

Gee, that's about the same size as here, the lawn is 2 times the size of the
house !!
Push mower (not gas?), you like hard work !
It would never work here..too much water, grows too thick and long, too fast.

> So did I mow again, you bet.

I'm betting they looked out and thought, "gee Wilma, time to get our lawn mower
going again, the neighbour's lawn looks better than ours " <smile>

hee hee...Stephen King movie last night.
I went for a walk and on the way back, I noticed that all the leaves on the
street had gone, but nobody had raked yesterday.
The wind was whipping up and I got home and guess where they were ?
In my driveway, so that's when I pulled out the lawnmower.
Fix 'em for now raking their lawns <g>  Yes, it was retribution

Next year it's a riding lawn mower
for this girl. Grass grow to fast here too!!

My neighbor to the east of me mows once
a month, they have a rider and their lawn is
half the size of mine. The nerve of them. <g>

The front yard, they tie up their horse and they
mow and fertilize at the same time, what a great
idea.
Oh Lord I know I shouldn't talk about my neighbors,

If I went by our test alarm that goes off at noon, I'd

Yanking to start it hurts my shoulders though.

I don't really mind doing it, but here in the summer
it can get to 110 and humid, where you sweat in the

Well the Doctor's nurse called today. I go next Wed.
for a guided needle biopsy. It appears they found a
couple of what seems to be lymph nodes that are
enlarged.

I would assume the ones I feel on the left side are
due to the ones swollen on the right. But you know
what they say about assuming.<g>

Would've rather talk w/ doctor first hand. I geuss
I'll get the chance soon enough.

I know when they did the radical neck dissection
they took 11 nodes from the right-side.

How many can there be in your neck?

Why don't they take them all?

I need a better understanding of nodes.

With my history I think the needle biopsy is a
waste of time. I've never had one show there
was cancer present when there was. I know
blood in the sample can render the test useless.

Any idea's for a better option, other than surgery?
Not because I'm afaid of surgery.

The whole body scan showed nothing. It was the CT.

I will ask the doc when I get a chance. But I'm so
full of qeustions now. <sigh>

Hi Jill, I don't know what other options are, maybe Steph would comment ?

The lymphatic system is like an interconnected tunnel system with
"stations" and "substations" along the way.
(so maybe you're right that what's happening on one side is affecting the
other side).
I think this system helps to clear out infections (filter bacteria, maybe
viruses too).
I know (some of) the breast cancer patients sometimes (some) get
lymphoedema
http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk/Resourcessupport/Controllingsymptoms/Lymphoedema
depending on which or how many lymph nodes are removed.

Gray's anatomy has writeups and pictures that can be enlarged
http://bartleby.com/107/ I started here and read the introduction in the
Lymph System section then, the head and neck ( section ) has the pictures
http://bartleby.com/107/177.html
Then there's superficial and deep lymph nodes.

If you can piece together the above, and below, I have a certificate of
graduation for you. <smile>

http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/facts/neck_dissections.htm
Radical neck dissection
Refers to the removal of all lymph node groups extending from the inferior
border of the mandible superiorly to the clavicle inferiorly, from the
lateral border of the sternohyoid muscle, hyoid bone, and contralateral
anterior belly of the digastric muscle medially, to the anterior border of
the trapezius muscle laterally. Included are all lymph nodes from levels
I-V with sacrifice of internal jugular vein, sternocleidomastoid muscle,
and spinal accessory nerve. []

I think that "sacrifice" means they don't remove those last 3 ones, but
I'm not sure.

There might be information on your surgical pathology report, as to what
they removed.

I guess they're trying to figure out if they _have_ to remove lymph nodes
and which?

I don't know if any of this will help, but it'll sure keep you busy :-)

Some neck dissections contain 40-50 nodes. 11 is a small number, but not
unreasonable.

The nodes come out with a neck dissection.........unless they are grossly
abnormal, the surgeon often doesn't even see them.

So I have the wrong understanding of a neck dissection.
I thought it was to help slow the progress of the diease,
but how can it work effectively if you can't see them?
As you can tell I'm confused.

It is part of the treatment of the disease, but the point is the surgeon
removes  alot of tissue from the neck, the nodes are just included

Yes, and very painful last night and some this morning.
The fluid from the lymph node got around my ear and
my neck is still very swollen. I've had about an hours
worth of sleep. Hubby's leaving for Texas again.
So I be taking him to the airport this morning.

The Doc that did the guided needle biopsy said
there were quite a few swollen nodes on both
sides of my neck, but that it didn't look like anything
to bad to him. Given my history, I would think otherwise.

So I will wait for the report.

Thanks J. The pain is a lot better. Doc gave me pain meds.
My neck is still really swollen. The Doc said its because of
the blood that got in the tissue. He said it could take a few
days for it to go away.

I forgot to say, they are checking me for lymphoma.
I had qiute a few swollen nodes on both sides of neck.
I've had no colds or sore throat. So who knows.

Geez Jill, you're starting to sound like Anita (but backwards).
That's how her posts started (as I recall, when she was overseas and
waiting to get back home to get properly diagnosed)...."is it lymphoma or
????"

Thyroid and/or neck stuff is sure complicated.

Hi Jill, now that you got the all clear, I have a theory for you.
Shingles can follow infections. Infections can be fungal, viral or
bacterial.
My theory is that Randy got a viral infection (while on the road) and
failed to notice or mention it to you. ("rode it out")
Then got the shingles and came home and passed it along to you,and thanks
why your lymph nodes are/were swollen.
If that's the case (and it's just a theory), it'll take time for the lymph
nodes to settle down.
Hugs Jill,

That's the only thing that still bothers me. That fact that I had
so many enlarged lymph nodes. The doctor said I couldn't
catch shingles. It is possible to get chicken pox, if you have
never had them. I have.
I go back to my other Doc(surgeon) on the 6th. So I'm
going to ask him his advice about this.
The foggy, lightheaded feeling I've been having is still
present. It comes and goes. But other than that, I have felt
good.
I know something is going on, now we need to figure out
just what.

Jill

So you didn't like my "you caught Randy's visus and this is causing your swollon
lymph glands" theory, eh? <smile>

I suppose if they drew fluids out of the lymph node and there were no white
blood cells, than that rules virus out?

I was just reading Willy Dilly's post and maybe seeing your doctor is a good
idea.

J,
If I felt bad, I would think maybe a virus. I'm just confused
as to why they would be enlarged. I know when they did
the CT for the guided needle biopsy, they said there were
qiute a few good size nodes. I also don't understand why
they don't seem to be worry about it. Given my history.
I'll have a long talk with my surgeon and see what he thinks.
I have had mild earaches on and off, from one ear to the other.
They don't last long and aren't that painful.

My oncologist kept asking me if I was experiencing any ringing in the ears,
like he was expecting ear related problems of some sort as a side effect to
chemo.

Sometimes I did, and reported it, and he took a harder look in my ears with
his little light during the exam, but never suggested any major concerns.
I know that lung cancer and testicular cancer both have the ability to
spread to the brain.  They did a brain MRI (negative results) on me as one
of the first tests after my NSCLC diagnosis, and Armstrong actually had
surface lesions removed by surgery during his battle.

Would a brain MRI be indicated here?

Tinnitus is a common side effect of cisplatin.
It's a very uncommon symptom of metastatic disease
