Hiyas....
Last Monday I was released from the hospital after a 3-day stay with lower
left quadrant pain. I was in the ER on 9/10 doubled over in terrible pain.
After a series of tests and a CT scan with dye, I found out that I have
Diverticulitis. I know it sounds really odd that I'd be posting about this
here but considering the incredible amount of support and information that
you offered me when my grandma was at end stage SCLC, I knew I could turn to
this group to have my question answered or to at least be pointed in the
right direction.
I've now learned that any kind of bowel pain is excruciating. Those with any
kind of disease has my sympathy but those who have to be especially careful
because of any illness or disease of their GI tract... well, now I do have
some idea... not a total picture but a small picture. The problem is that
when I went to the ER, I apparently was a step away from abcess, so the
infection was pretty bad. The doctors have had me on 1000 mg of Cipro per
day (500 2x daily) and 1500 mg of Flagyl daily (500 mg 3x daily) and as one
of the unfortunate side effects of the antibiotics, I've developed thrush!
The doc has me on 100000 U of Nystatin (this'll gross you out, it certainly
has me queasy every time I have to do it!) swish and swallow 4 times a day.
The problem is that the nystatin isn't helping. I just took my last dose of
Cipro tonight so that may help! I've got another week of the Flagyl. I'm
barely on a soft diet right now. Does anyone have any ideas? I have a really
bitter taste in my mouth, which I guess is from the Thrush. I've never
personally had it before but many of my patients did have it and they've
been able to kick the thrush within a couple of days, I've had it now for
about 2 weeks! my throat burns and I'm simply miserable.... I'm open to any
and all suggestions!
Thanks!!

Hello, Came across your posting. I have some info that may help. It is
an herb based remedy. Go to www.herbalhealer.com. You can become a
member for free and they will send you a catalogue of products. You can
also research the site for info re: your problem. There is also a phone
# for ordering and asking questions. 870-269-4177. I believe the
treatment involves Colloidal Silver and HHA Prodophylus which are safe
enough even for babies who suffer from thrush. Hope this info helps.

Luke, don't post those types of things here.
They can be misconstrued by patients with brain mets, chemo brain, confused
patients, patients who don't totally understand English.

Sly,
I expect it will improve after you've stopped the antibiotics and your bacterial
"flora" (start ) to reset themselves.
In the meantime, on another newsgroup (different disease, same problems), some
women eat (daily) "live culture" (plain, no sugar added) yogurt. It usually says
"acidophillus" (sp?) on it somewhere on the label. But I don't know if it's a
problem for your Diverticulitis (or not).
And they ask their doctors for a swish/gargle mix of " generic Lido/Ben/Mylanta"
I assume that's lidocaine, benadryl/mylanta (mix).
Don't do it yourself, talk to your doctor about getting this or a similar mix
prescribed for you.
The person who posted that said that the pharmacy mixes the solution according
to the doctor's instructions.
Your doctor has to figure out the best mix (for you) and in combination with the
nystatin.
I'm sorry you're having these troubles, sly.
Since you don't have cancer, when you have general health questions,
news:sci.med is really the place to ask.
There's doctors (variety of specialties) on that newsgroup. Do subscribe and
read a bit (as you able) so you can sort out who's who there.
Iwish you well and hope you improve soon,
J-not a doctor.
