Hospice, it's a good thing

Hi group:

The family had a meeting with Hospice this week.  Hospice is good.
They take care of an amazing amount of annoyances.
They get hardware for patient care (like lifts and tray tables and
whatnot).  They arrange transport.  They FedEx meds to your door.
Hospice is a good thing.

It sucks that the steroids to counteract the cancer do their own
damage.  Our patient put off the radiotherapy so long that the
steroids have all but crippled her through muscle atrophy.

When we asked her what she had for breakfast, she said:
"Toast, eggs, spiders, coffee..."
I think the pain medication is pretty darned good... I think some of
her mistaken word choice is a combination of tumor, high blood sugar
and dilaudid (sp?).

Anyway - I am familiar with a whole new hospital now, and we continue
to "hang in there".

Oh, and the wife's biopsy was ok.  Some kind of virus, it'll go away
on its own.  Yay.

Dog is still very ill and behaving oddly.  I'm surrounded by end of
life issues.  Oh well.  You take it one day at a time and enjoy what
you got while you got it.  I think providing aid and comfort to
someone stricken and their family may be the most important thing I've
ever done.

Tired.  Must sleep now.

Goodnight, Wolfgang, you're right.  Hospice is a good thing.  When my friend
Stacey was so ill she couldn't raise her head off the pillow, hospice was here
with her and us.  One of the nurses would come lay in bed beside her and just
chitchat.  She was amazing - as were all the doctors and nurses we had.

I agree, Hospice staff are truly amazing people, they are the most
compassionate kind of people I have ever met.  They treat the whole family
as well as the patient.  They are so caring, two people from Tony's hospice
even attended his funeral.

Hang in there Wolfgang, you are doing so well.

Hugs

Hi Wolfgang,
Hospice care is amazing.  Patrick and I had stayed in a hospice in Toronto,
and the staff and even the patients there, were wonderful.  We also had
extramural (home care type of hospice with RN's)  when the time came for
Patrick to be on medications.  They were lovely people.  They would sit and
chat with us and take care of our needs too.  The nurses in the palliative
care unit of the hospital are my version of angels though.  Around where I
live, we do not have a hospice but an 8 bed unit in the hospital.  The
nurses, MD, social workers, even the clerical staff were a different type of
person.  They really took the time for both patient and family.  They made
sure we were all cared for, took the time to listen and even cry with us if
that is what we needed.  I will forever be grateful to them, they made
Patrick's last days comfortable.
Take care.

My prayers are with you, I know what you must be going through. Hang in
there and try to get some rest.
