Block Senders (filter/killfile) - Suggestion on who to block

Thread view:
Enable EMail Alerts  Start New Thread

J - 02 May 2004 11:48 GMT
Sometimes one or more posters posts to this newsgroup and don't really
belong here.
To avoid upsets, block them, so you never see their messages.
Do not reply to the persons mentioned in these "block messages" posts.
It just makes things worse. (as you've perhaps already noticed).

How to Block Senders in Outlook Express
Highlight/select the post.
click on 'message' between 'tools and help' at the top of OE...
then click on block sender...

from there it is automatically done...
it asks you if you want all their messages deleted right now (yes or no)
and voila...
you will never see another message from that sender.

or if doing it the long way of typing (or copying and pasting), block
the following poster:

poster name:     Medical Watch
Posting e-mail address: medicalwatch@myway.com

For those using Netscape, in my (version of) Netscape, it's Edit,
Message Filters on the menu at the top of the message window.

It doesn't work with you since you use cloak your idenity. I have more rules
in my outlook box for  you then I want to count.
Please open a  free account such as hotmail accout so those of us who want
to block you can.

I doubt if votes count much here and I am not sure they should. Use Groups
are one place where we can vote with out feet, or more accurately with out
typing fingers.

I came here a month or so ago seeking advice and the experiences of others
because my wife of 33 years had breast cancer. I have received what I was
looking for, as well as some advertisements for alternative medicine. I
already had more of that than I could use. If others want to try that, fine,
but not me, and not (if she listens to me) my wife.

My advice, for all who do not like this news group, leave it and find one
you do like. There are plenty of them out there. You can find almost
anything you want, I think. Just don't try to ruin what this one means to
some of us.

If you don't want to read my posts, don't. As soon as you see "poster" J, go to
the next post.
Besides, posters need to see my posts here, so if they contravene the Charter,
they cannot claim that they were not warned (before being reported).

if you cant figure out how to read headers to determine where to file
complaints, chances are the complaint wont be well enough written to
make sense.

No Emily. Different one. "Doc" and his style of writing and posting is
different. (and he seems to always post with the same email address.

BTW the "doc" here is not a doctor. (and has 3 at least different
e-mails)

I'm much relieved.  I didn't think it was the same one; just
wanted to check.  The other doc (and I don't think he's a doctor
either) is a really nice chap.

Same here. I propose that we add Sturgeon's law and its related axioms and
corollaries to the charter as a tribute to the drifters in and out, rather
than worry about taking them seriously.  Anyone who would use a kiddie porn
domain as part of his forged identity can hardly expect anyone to take him
seriously.

Sturgeon's Law as applied to discussion lists
Axiom #3: "Sturgeon's Law (90% of everything is crap) applies to discussion
lists."
Corollary #5: "In an unmoderated discussion, no one can agree on what
constitutes the 10%."
Corollary #6: "Nothing guarantees that the 10% isn't crap, too."

What puzzles me is he is only targeting this newsgroup (so far). (according to
the Google archives)
We are not the only newsgroup who has a Charter.
This is not the only newsgroup that posters tell others to block certain
troublemakers and we're certainly not the only newsgroup who reports posters.

Best to continue blocking him.

I read about portals years ago and decided why go through a third party to get
what I can find myself with many search engines. I'm not into bloatware.

Except from addresses are easily forged, and medical watch will probably
change his/hers once they realize whom they are associating with.
myway.com is best known for harboring nigerian embezzlers and kiddie porn
pushers.

Or maybe myway.com will complain about his/her/its pulling down the
reputation of their domain.

For those using xnews, either of these headers in the score file will work
for blocking logic even after med watch morphs, although consider blocking
on the /24 for the posting host, since I think verizon has several:

NNTP-Posting-Host: 4.47.143.104
X-Complaints-To: abuse@verizon.net

myway would have a valid complaint to verizon based on the forgery of their
domain name that results in spam hitting their servers, by myway is so
heavily blocked for the kiddie porn spamming itself that it is harder than
usual to develop sympathy for them.

nope. truth is an absolute defense in a libel case.  Further, people who
