For what it is worth: Sloan-Kettering ranks second on the list of best
hospitals of US News & World Report, see

all the best with your mom, Jan

Sloane Kettering is an outstanding place. In Europe, when people go to the
USa for cancer treatment, they either go to MD Anderson or Sloane Kettering.
I went to Houston, but I would have gone to NY exactly the same.
You are right to have your Mom taken care of by specialized people. A well
treated cancer has more chances to get cured that a cancer treated by
incompetent people.

For Cancer, the 'Best Hospitals' in the USA are probably M D Anderson,
and Sloan-Kettering, however the difference in outcome between either
of them, and a top notch facility like the Mayo Clinic is probably
very limited. It is only when you start going to hospitals that don't
don't have sections that deal with this stuff for a living that the
situation begins to change.

Just got back from Sloan-Kettering after meeting with the surgeon.
First of all from a psychological viewpoint the professionalism and caring
attitude from the time I received a phone call till today from every single
person I've dealt with has been so positively incredible. The lackadaisical
and negative experience I had trying to get her colonoscopy report, biopsy
slides/report and cat scans from the various doctors had me frustrated and
mad.I wasn't going to trust these people with who they recommended and the
hospital. For example when I asked for the colonoscopy report I got the run
around between her oncologist who was treating her for breast cancer and the
GI doctor who did the colonoscopy. The answer I finally got was the Doctor
was on vacation and to come back next week.I told them that was unacceptable
because my mom was in danger of blocking and needed the report ASAP which
they finally produced. Same with the biopsy slides, no one could give me an
answer where to get them from. It goes on and on! I won't bore you guy's
with further details but you get the point. There is a giant difference
between Sloan-Kettering where everything is done under one roof and the
rest. At Sloan you are being treated by a team of Doctors and professionals
supporting them. Not a bunch of morons who who cope attitudes when you ask
them for something. Big difference!

Reply to J:
Yep Sigmoidoscopy was done and I watched. Tumor is the size of a lemon. I
asked him to estimate
staging in his opinion knowing proper analysis is done after surgery. His
estimated stage 2 or 3.
Can anyone offer any opinions on long term survival?
He was also able to get scope past tumor where the first Doctor who did her
intial colonoscopy said he couldn't proceed any further. So the surgeon
ordered another colonscopy to check down stream before surgery. I forgot to
ask but wouldn't the cat scan have picked any further tumors or would they
have to be a certain size?
