We got good news from the oncologist today regarding my mother's lung
cancer.  It is limited stage small cell lung cancer which he said can
potentially be cured!  It has not spread to any other parts of her
body!  She'll begin chemotherapy tomorrow using a combination of
Cisplatin and VP16 and she'll begin radiation treatment after her 2nd
cycle of chemotherapy.  I guess this is the best scenario we could
hope for under the circumstances.  I am very relieved that we finally
know what exactly is wrong, what the treatment is, and what the
outcome might be.

Thanks for your continued support!

Hi Kim, Glad they caught it early.
VP16 is Etoposide
I usually look up the individual chemos (or combinations) if they are
listed here just to see what to possibly expect.

Some of the side effects can be controlled. They may even give meds ahead
of time to control some of the side effects.
Just let the oncologist know if something new (or listed) above starts to
happen.

Keep in touch and let us know how it's going, ok?
Hugs to you and your mother.

Kim,

I have SCLC and went on the same chemo that your mother is taking. It
ain't fun, but bear with her.  My cancer was limited.  (SCLC is either
limited or extensive.) I started my radiation the same day as my chemo.
I had six rounds of chemo three weeks apart, and chemo twice a day for
35 sessions.  It was a non fun 5 months but worth it.  I elected not to
have PCI at the end of my chemo.  When I went back for my 10 week
checkup, the MRI showed brain mets in the ceribellum. They did a PCI to
clean up the cancer. I will have another MRI and CT scan in a couple of
weeks.

I had my last chemo in Oct 03. and more radiation in Jan 04.  I am
still very tired.  Some days walking across the room will wear me out.
I have to sit dowm and huff & puff for a few min.  Good days are rare,
but a treat when they happen.

Keep us posted on her progress.  There is life after chemo.  It is just

forgot to finish.  Must be chemo brain at work again. Chemo brain is a
condition that you both can look forward to. Kinda like "old timers
disease" or CRS.  Hard to describe because of the wide range of
symptoms, but she'll know when it strikes.
