Socks the white house cat - 29 Mar 2004 14:23 GMT
I woke up at 1:30 to an odd light in my window. It was my neighbor's house
on fire.  Heavy enough flames, close enough to us, that we evacuated our
house.  We got some paint singed when it spread to us for a moment, but no
structural damage. A passing milk truck had already called 911, and the FD
was set up and pumping water right at the time it spread.

I had a choice between carrying a double handful of cats out of the house,
or finding my car keys to move the cars out of our driveway.  i chose the
cats.

Bad news was that the plastic panels on my Saturn parked in the driveway
melted, and I dont have "other than collision" insurance on the car.
neighbor's liability insurance might cover it.

got a little smoke in the house, but it doesnt seem to be affecting my bad
lung.

Thank goodness you woke up!!  Was everyone okay?  Again, it shows just how
fragile lives can be sometimes.

Smart choice with the cats too!!

Someday in the distant future, archeologists digging thru the ruins of
alt.support.cancer  will discover that "Alayne"

I sleep lightly.  The light from flames doesnt look like anything normal,
so I got up to look out the window to see what it is.  By the time I got
from my window to the phone and dialed 911 I could already hear the
sirens from the milkman calling on his cell phone.

Saturn doesnt look so bad on further reflection.  If the insurance doesnt
cover it, I have a unique mark of distinction not worth fixing. The story
should be worth a pint at the local pub.

No injuries. All animals accounted for, including the neighbor's cat. Red
Cross put them in a hotel for the night.

If you have a "summer fan" setting on forced air furnace, you could turn it on
to clear the air faster.
Double handful? Is that 4 cats? I know from something that happened last
summer (neighbour burning toxic trash) that cats go "low" to get under the
smoke, so it's a big panic to try and find them and get them out before they
(or we) asphyxiate.
Sorry about your car Socks, hope the neighbor's insurance covers it.
I keep my keys in same place, so I can grab them with my eyes closed.
The plan would be grab the keys, wallet and cat(s), put them in the car, and
move it away, then call the FD.
Thank goodness for milkmen/women !
J
