Dear Sirs,
I am the father of a four months old child. When he was born, the doctors
discovered a big tumor, more de one pound on the back of his stomach. He had
surgery, ande everything seemed to return to be fine, but three days ago,
they have discovered a new tumor, almost as big as the first one.
I have many questions, and came here for help. Is this situation usual? He
will have urgent surgery again in four days. Two operations on such a small
baby have us felt very worried. Can this happen again and often? Coudl you
advise us about a good children oncology hospital in the U.S.?
Thanks in advance for your time.
His name is Nicol?s. I beg you to pray for us all, his three brothers and
his mother.

Angel,

I am not a doctor, I cannot give you advice; but I am a parent and my heart
goes out to you that you have to face this for a second time. I hope and
pray that your son will recover.

With best wishes

I am so sorry to hear of the diagnosis of your newest child.  Cancer brings
pain, both pysical and emotional, but a diagnosis of one so young must be
the worst imaginable.

I am not a medic either, I was a caregiver and I am now a single mother of
young daughters, so I am unable to answer any technical questions that you
may have, although there are others here that can and will.  What I can
offer though, is my sympathies, my support and my hugs and I would like to
pass some of this onto yourself and your family.

Best wishes

Hello there, I am very sorry to hear about your little Nicolás.

Apparently teratomas can recur, so it is not unusual.
I'm not a doctor, I search out cancers.
I've found one which seems similar (in age and location) to your son

http://www.kjronline.org/abstract/files/v01n04226.pdf (which I cannot read due
to a missing component in my software)
http://tinyurl.com/2nlze (is the html version of the same report). (is part of
what it says there).
Gastric teratoma is an extremely rare neoplasm, accounting for less than 1% of
all teratomas occurring in infancy and childhood. We describe a case in which
histological examination of a gastric teratoma occurring in a 3-month-old boy
disclosed immature neural tissue. The gross specimen of the round exogastric
mass thus obtained measured 14×9×6.5 cm and originated from the posteroinferior
wall of the stomach along its greater curvature (Fig. 1D).
The tumor was totally excised, involving partial gastrectomy, and the defect in
the stomach was repaired. Three months later, follow-up CT revealed neither
evidence of tumor recurrence nor distant metastasis.
Gastric teratomas are considered benign, with excellent prognosis after total
excision.[end copied text]

So perhaps this time they will have to do more extensive surgery and that would
be the end of it? (I don't know)

Tell us, are you in Spain? Perhaps the doctors who read this newsgroup would
have suggestions as to treatments and/or the closest best to where you are, so
please reply, then watch for other replies to your post.

Thank you in advance for your help. We are located in Valencia, a big city
on the mediterranean coast. We attend "La Fe" Hospital, probably one of the
best children clinic in Spain. Next monday, is holidays now in Valencia, I
will show this documents to the doctors.
Thank you one more time.

Hello Ángel
I was hoping to hear from Steph about whether radiation therapy would be an
option, so keep checking to see if he has some thoughts for you. It does appear
to be a rare condition, so perhaps he's never had patients with such..
And/or perhaps it's handled solely by surgeons.
It does sound like you've got good care for the little one there.
Keep in touch and let us know.
Best,
J

Teratomas are generally very curable tumours, but the specifics are
important, so I can't really say about this one. Often chemotherapy is the
best treatment if surgery fails
?.G. - 23 Mar 2004 01:47 GMT
Hello,
The clinic report states "Inmature Gastric Teratoma" for the first tumor. It
was located on the stomach back. The size was very big, but well capsulated.
The information about the histology is in spanish and I find myself unable
to translate into english,

Type it ángel, and we'll see if we can discern what it says.
Best wishes for the surgery today.

I can't answer your questions because I am not a doctor.  (I am here
because my mother has had a tumour (now removed) and I was looking
for information to give her.)  I am however also a parent - my
youngest child is nearly 4 years old - and my heart goes out to you,
your wife and your little one.

You will find help here and support, from cancer patients,
caregivers and also from the medically qualified people who post
here.

Hugs to Nicol?s too from my own son (aged 6) whose own name is
Nicholas.

Hello again,

Nicol?s had surgery one week ago. It was a long, complicated operation, but
finished with more or less good results: The tumor was extended over his
stomach, intestinus and pancreas, but could have been mostly removed. We
await now the results of the mass analysis. It didn?t look very well to the
surgeon. He stated that it was probably malignat, buy we will care about
that tomorrow. Today, we enjoy the beauty of a four months old MAN?s smile.
Thank you all for your comprehension, cheer and help.

Thank you for reporting back - I was thinking about you and little
Nicolas and wondering how you were all doing.  I hope you don't have
to wait too long for the results of the analysis.  Sending lots of
'get well' hugs to you and your family, and especially little
Nicolas.
