My mother has lung cancer....

I found out today that my mother has lung cancer.  The initial
pathology report indicates that it is small cell cancer, but the final
pathology report won't be available until Friday.  Treatment for small
cell lung cancer is radiation and chemotherapy.  The doctor wouldn't
go into any details beyond that, so when I got home from the hospital
tonight I read up on small cell lung cancer on webmd.com and similar
sites.  It sounds like it is a very aggressive cancer and that there is no
"cure" for it.  Do any of you have advice for us?  Can you suggest any good
websites or books with information on lung cancer?

Thanks.

Hello and welcome (is there a name we can call you?)

I'm very sorry you've had to join the ranks here.
There's quite a few books in our FAQ
http://www.cancersupporters.com/asc/links.html
I suppose the treatment decision would depend on the extent of spread and
results of other testing.
The advice would be wait until you have more information.
Get to know the regulars here and ignore the ones who blow in with posts which
they claim to be "cures" or want to sell you something. (and the loonies who
sometimes visit us).

I read the professional version here
http://www.nci.nih.gov/cancerinfo/pdq/treatment/small-cell-lung/healthprofessional

Please keep in touch and let us know as more information is incoming.

Pleased to meet ya Kim,
It's quiet this week, I'm not sure if it's "spring break" all over the
world.
Some "support" posters are missing right now, but hopefully they'll be
back soon.

It must be the "boomers" because often we're hearing ( here and some of
my friends) that same person has others in the family with cancers
also.  It's very hard on the families when there's multiples to worry
about.

Take care of you and keep us updated on how it's going.

my grandma had the small cell lung cancer. She also took the chemo and
radiation. She had a wonderful last year with us. I haven't been feeling up
to posting too much but you and your mom are in my thoughts....

15-20% of patients with limited stage small cell lung cancer are cured by
treatment. Patients with advanced stage aren't

Kim,
My father in law, who is like a real Dad to me also has lung cancer.
They gave him 6 months, and it been more than 3 years. He has a lot of
bad days, but then he has good days.
I just had surgery on the 17th and I'm on pain meds. So my mind isn't
real clear.
I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. You will find a lot of great support
here.
I will say prayer's for you and your Mom and family.
