I am Joan, age 74, single, from El Paso, Texas. I live with my son,
Richard, and moved here from San Diego, CA to be near my sister, and for
more affordable housing. I was diagnosed with IBC, left breast, on 2/15/04.
Had lumpectomy 5/4/04 with removal of 27 lymph nodes; two were positive. I
am waiting to start radiation; then will have CMF chemo. I have had the
best medical care available here, and the doctors and nurses have all been
very caring. The ng has been so helpful, and I have learned a lot. I think
I am going to do well through the rest of my treatment.

Hi folks
Was diagnosed just before Thanksgiving, 2002. Had a lumpectomy; results were
infiltrating ductal carcinoma (1 larger lump, 1 smaller lump) spread to 3 of 8
nodes removed. Stage II, estrogen positive, HER2 negative. Had to have a
second op in January 2003 to clean up the margins. Treated with CMF for 6
cycles and 28 days of radiation therapy.
Mother had two mastectomies, at different times; several of her sisters had BC.
Oddly, out of numerous cousins, only 2 of us have had BC.
I've been married for 36 years, 2 biological children, 2 adopted, all grown up
now.
Living in Washington state - hobbies are knitting, SCA and astronomy.

Hi Joan--first welcome to the group where nobody wants to be and wishing you
all the best. Did you have any chemo first before the lumpectomy? I am asking
because usually with IBC chemo is given immediately after diagnosis--within
days--before surgery. Are you now seeing a dr. in San Diego, and if so, where?
Do you know if you are you ER+ or ER-? I am guessing that if you moved from
out-of-state that you have had a '2nd opinion' in both states. Are you being
seen at a specialty cancer center in San Diego? Just wondering, though, why
CMF chemo was chosen as opposed to one with Adriamycin or even a taxane? I am
sure there is a protocol for determining which your dr's followed--am wondering
if they gave rationale. Either way, I am glad that you are feeling positive
about your medical experiences. That is so important. Take care and wishing
you all the best!
