> Hello Balsey,
Yes, my daughter had a bout of this when she was in high school.  She took a
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and it cleared.  If I recall correctly, it
took a little time.  I'm sorry you are experiencing the pain of this.  Thank
goodness it's not related to BC.  Hope you feel better real soon.

Yes, I had this about 13 years ago.  It was very painful.  As I recall, I
had weekly injections, steroids I think, where it hurt.  Also, I took
Naprason (sp?) a few times a day.  I believe it took several months to
resolve.  But on the bright side, it has never come back.  Good luck!

It is pretty common.  There are joints between the ribs and the spine
that allow for up and down motion of the ribs when breathing.  There are
no joints at the breastbone (sternum).  Instead, there is a segment of
flexible cartilage between the end of the bony rib and the sternum.  The
poin where the bone turns to cartilage is vulnerable; just as an iron
cord breaks right where it comes out of the iron, that transition leads
to damage to the cartilage.  Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen,
naproxen, aspirin, Relafen, DayPro, and a number of others usually help.

Hi I am usually in alt.support.thyroid. I am hypothyroid.
Some have costochondritis because of hypothyroidism.
Treatment is right dose of thyroid hormones if hypo, and NSAID's like
you list.

By the way, I am studying nursing and I lurk here because I am in
practice on a ward with some ca. mammae patients and the rest different
bowel cancers and some are not cancers, just inflammation.
I know nothing about breast cancer patients and want to learn more about
what you think and what to do as a nurse.

Hi Nora, welcome.  I applaud you for going into this very much needed
profession.  My mom was an R.N.  One experience I had with r.n.'s was that
there weren't enough of them.  The trained r.n.'s have been wonderful.  They
are the ones who are called to draw blood when the tech's can't do it on those
of us whose veins have changed from chemo.  Another problem I had was when I
wasn't being treated by an r.n.--i.e. when my drains were being 'milked.'
Before my mastectomy I was actually trained how to do it by a nurse--routine
procedure.  However, they had nurses although mostly lvn's come in and do it.
One that I had was afraid to do it correctly.  So, my best thoughts are with
you--if you are going to be an oncologist nurse--being here and in other groups
where patients post is one of the best ways to get a different kind of
'hands-on' education that will be invaluable to you in broadening your
knowledge of dealing with patients.  Wishing you all the best!
