Hi,
My mom underwent treatment for Stage 3 breast cancer this past year;
and finished with her last chemotherapy in November in India. She has
been visiting me in New York since December 2003. For the past week or
two, she has been complaining of headaches during the day, which seem
to disappear around nighttime. I feel it might be because of the cold
here, because she has never seen such cold weather before . But there
is also a slight fear that perhaps it may be related to cancer. Is
that a possibility? Should I take her for a checkup here? She has been
asked to go for a complete checkup every six months, hence her next
checkup is due in May.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

If she's not prone to getting headaches, I would be concerned. There's
nothing wrong with visiting an urgent care or emergency room just to be
safe.
Take care,
Jasmine

your guess is probably right( non cancer related headache) but best to
double check with the MD..I wouldn't wiat until May though.

My wife was diagnosed with BC around 4 years ago. We've
been through various scares, but no recurrences and in
my experience talking with doctors/nurses things cancer-
related don't stop at night. I think cancer pain is
something that sticks around--persistent.
As everyone here says a quick check with your internist
certainly can't hurt and maybe it's something else, non
cancer related, that needs attention--stress?
I know it's a long way but can you check in with your
doctor in India? He/she may be able to allay your fears
and knows the history. At sloan-kettering the nurses
are available and knowledgeable, perhaps you can get a
hold of a nurse at your mom's hospital for some
perspective on this situation?
best,

Probably the cold dry air dehydrating her nasal passages, like you get at
high altitude. Or it could be a virus or something she's picked up, perhaps
one that her 'home' immunity does not cover; or could be the food, perhaps
an allergy.
I think it is too early to be thinking cancer when so many things have
recently changed in her environment. The rule of thumb for secondary cancer
symptoms is that they persists and get slowly worse over months. Even if it
were, it probably isn't very time critical. If the pain is mild then my
inclination would be to wait a while and see if it goes away. How long till
she goes back? That would be the test of whether it is climatic.
If the headache is disabling or demanding a lot of over-the-counter
analgesia (beyond the limits written on the packet) then she ought to see a
doctor anyway if only to get some proper relief, and no harm in getting the
routine tests done then.

It could be due to the dry air drying up the sinuses. Try humidifying
the house a little with a humidifer or steam.

Say no to fixed width tables. They look terrible in all browsers.
