Hello everyone,
I am new here to the group and wanted to ask a few questions. For
months I have had pain in my right breast, feels like a prickly type
of pain. I wasn't too concerned until the pain started getting to
where I could notice it during the day. I thought maybe the pain was
due to sleeping on that side all of the time or from wearing sports
bra's for quite a few years. I quit wearing the sports bra's and
started wearing regular bra's, now the pain is starting to go away,
but it is there just a little bit now. Since I am now concerned about
the pain and what is going on with my breasts, I just now started
doing self breast examinations, well I noticed a very tiny lump on
this right breast, it is hard, but it's not big, about the size of a
small nail head. I tried finding other lumps on my breasts, kind of
hoping the lump would be normal, but I didn't find anymore, just that
one. I am 42 almost 43. No cancer on both sides of my family. Had my
first mamogram back in April 2000, they found nothing. I am definately
scared about this.... I do have a doctors appointment next Monday, but
it is for something else and I will tell him about this. Could someone
tell me what this could be and should I be concerned?
Thanks for reading,
Dharma

Only your physician can actually allay your fears, but chances are it's nothing
to worry about. Breasts are full of lumpy things and a qualified infdividual
will be able to tell you more about your specific lump. It's good that you're
seeing a doctor Monday - make sure you ask him/her about it.
I know that I have had an OB/GYN visit every six months since I've been 16
where they do a breast exam and a pap smear. You should make sure to have
these things done on a regualr basis. Early detection is important.
Please let us know how things go Monday.
Take care.

Dharma,
Make sure the doctor examines it on Monday.
It's probably nothing, but better to get it checked out.

Dharma,
My fiancee had a lump appear during her recent pregnancy and she went
to see our doctor and after our sons birth she saw a breast
specialist. Both of them put it down to blocked milk ducts, the lump
got larger until in the end a different specialist suggested a biopsy.
This is a simple procedure and one I would recommend you ask to have
done if you are not happy with what your doctor has to say or if the
lump gets larger.
If it had been suggested to us as soon as our baby was born we would
have been dealing with a very minor tumor rather than the 6" one we
now have to beat!
I must also say that my fiancee has always had lumpy breast and up
unitl now they have been no cause for concern as I'm sure yours will
prove to be.
I wish for you good news on Moday.

Hi Warren,
The first thing that went through my mind when I found this lump was
the thought of getting bad news when I go to the doctor. I know that I
wouldn't be able to handle something like this.... I get too
emotional.... this is another reason why I never became a nurse like I
wanted to when I was younger. I had two friends that died from
cancer... one lung cancer and the other cervical cancer.... this was a
wake up call for me, so I went and had a pap smear every single
year.... but I missed 2 years already and need to get it done
again.... I have no excuse for missing the past two years.... I just
hate going. I am just lucky that I found this now and not several
months later, but I am still scared. This doctor that I am going to on
Monday is a new doctor... he is my husband's doctor... I changed to my
husbands doctor because my old doctor never really took things that I
told him too seriously.... he would always say "that's normal"....
well, if it's "normal" than why am I only 42 and I feel like I am 80
most of the time? I just haven't been feeling like myself anymore. It
also could have something to do with me maybe going through
pre-menopause, but I am not sure if I am going through that yet.
Anyway, I observed my husbands doctor and watched how thorough he is
with my husband so I figured I would change to this doctor and
hopefully get some answers.
How is your fiancee now? I hope fine! I know it must be hard dealing
with this stuff.... I cannot imagine!
God bless you, her and your children!

In addition to what others have said (with which I agree), I'd note that
(1) something like 80% of lumps turn out *not* to be breast cancer,
and (2) breast cancer lumps usually don't hurt. Both of the symptoms --
pain & a lump, with the pain decreasing after changing to a regular bra
-- would be consistent with (for example) fibrocystic breast disease . .
. which sounds scary, but is essentially a non-cancerous condition that
causes uncomfortable lumps.
Following up with your doctor is exactly the right thing to do. Very
likely, s/he will determine that it's nothing serious. When you get
good news, come back & tell us (we love good news). In the *very*
*un*likely event that you get bad news, c'mon back for some support and
sympathy.
Take care, and try not to worry any more than necessary,
Ann T.

Hi Ann,
This tiny lump does not hurt, it doesn't move around either. It's the
breast itself that hurt. When I talked about the pain to my family, my
daughter mentioned that I shouldn't wear sports bra's all of the time
like I was and that I need support.... it is strange how the pain
subsided since I have changed to support bra's, but very slightly now
do I feel the pain.... hopefully this cured the pain. Now the big deal
is the tiny lump... this is another reason why I am concerned because
the lump doesn't hurt and it doesn't move. I just hope and pray that
it is nothing serious! To be honest, I am very scared!

I am glad the discomfort improved with change of bras. That's a good sign.
Also, as someone mentioned, supposedly 80% of all lumps are benign. Hopefully
that will be the case for you.
I do understand your concerns, though, particularly re. the tiny lump that
doesn't move; however, it is a good sign that it IS tiny.
It is good that you will have this checked out by a physician. Take care and
wishing you all the best!

Hi Dharma,
Sorry to hear you are having a scare, and I hope you get the answers you
need quickly.
My opinion in your situation would be to tell your doctor as soon as
possible, and get it investigated. If you're like me, and you avoid this
now, I think you'll regret it later, if only because it will still be
roaming around in the back of your mind. Likely, its nothing at all to
worry about. You might as well confirm it.
Best of luck to you.
Laurie
