Dexamethasone Side Effects

I have mets to spine and neck (as well as nodes and lung - but chemo
starts next Friday), and was put on Dexamethasone while undergoing
radiation. I have the "moon face", where it looks like I've gained 50
pounds in my face alone (even though I've actually lost 10!), I have
shortness of breath, and pains in my knees, especially going up and
down stairs.

We've started tapering off the steroids, and the radiation is over.
When can I expect to see some relief from the side effects? My face is
so swollen, it hurts. They had to literally ply me into my mask for my
last two radiation treatments.

Any information from someone who has gone through similar experiences
would be helpful.

Oh yeah, and I start Zeloda and Carboplatin on Friday. Anyone have fun
with these guys yet?

Thanks,
Mary

If I remember rightly the water retention should have a half-life of a week
or so.  My wife had this treatment for dorsal spine mets, although not with
such severe side effects as you mention (perhaps a lower dose), and I don't
remember it taking long to go away.  She put on quite a lot of weight from
Tamoxifen anyway so it was less noticeable.

heck - i got to 183 kg on tamoxifen - back down to 140kg without any dieting
now -

say - Cytopia in Melbourne, Australia has found a compound which acts on
advanced prostate cancer in mice with human cancer cells - believe it will
work on bc too - "throws a spanner in the works of cancer cells while normal
cells just wait out" - expected to be released in 2 years ... chief
scientist is really confident - hope the trials go well and we could have
something to work with if we survive another 2 years.
