Will Rogaine work for chemo-induced baldness?

I can't seem to find an answer to this question on the web
(at least not quickly).  Does anyone know offhand?  The
specific chemo is weekly Taxol.  Thanks. - Tony

I don't know either, it seems unlikely to do anything to inhibit hair loss,
but it might help speed regrowth afterwards.  I wouldn't want to mix it with
chemo anyway without first checking with an oncologist.

Hi, Tony -

I'm not a doctor so I'm gonna guess.  Chemotherapy attacks cells that
divide quickly like hair cells, mucous membranes, finger and toenails
and even cancer cells  :)

If chemo is killing hair cells I'm not sure how Rogaine is gonna
prevent that - plus, Rogaine takes at least eight weeks to work, yes?
By that time another couple of chemo cycles will have happened.

Hair loss with Adriamycin is pretty much universal.  Deborah's hair
started growing back slowly when she was switched to Taxotere and
Navelbine didn't cause hair loss at all.

There's a study out there somewhere (I don't have a cite, but know I
read it) suggesting that Rogaine helps hair grow back faster/thicker
after chemo than it would otherwise have done.  I know of nothing that
suggests it will help during chemo, and as others have said, I'd be
hesitant to add it to the drug mix.

If it has the propensity to do that, I wonder what impact it might have on
microscopic tumor cells at the time.  Although it may have a positive effect on
hair regrowth, it might possibly interfere with the effectiveness of the chemo
as well.
Having gone through hair loss twice--the one aspect about chemo I dreaded most
prior to doing it--much to my surprise the loss of hair was not that big of
deal--overall.  Sure, the initial shock is a bit sobering but learned that it
even had some positives.
--I learned that my hairdresser was right--that I didn't have a misshapen
head--that the annoying flat spot was due to the way my hair grew.
--Wigs can be save money in the long run.  It cost $15.00 to get it washed and
restyled.
--With a good wig, one saves time and eliminates bad hair days.
--You can change them and modify your hairstyle more easily whenver you want.
Of course, bald is cold in the winter, and I gained a new empathy for
bald=headed guys/people...

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer. The
consumer affairs folks at Pfizer don't know for sure,
either.  They suggest we talk to Gloria's doctor.  Frankly,
I think we'll get better information about this issue from
the people here! - Tony
