Hello Mike:

I almost found your response funny as it was so true.  In my case the
doctors at a large University hospital in NYC mis-diagnosed me in saying
I was fine even though I had complained about one breast being different
from the other.   I complained that one breast seemed much denser then
the other and was told that my mammography was clean so I should stop
worrying.  I left for our Florida home and try as I may, I knew
something was wrong.  I went to another doctor in Florida and it seems
they all rallied around my former mammography which was supposedly
clean.  Finally I went back to NYC and went for a much earlier then
planned mammography and BINGO!  I had stage 4 breast cancer!! !  Amusing
isn't it that I went from having not anything to stage IV??  When we
finally found my films (they said that they could not find them… how
convent) there was a odd dark spot in the film………. Hmm, so I guess the
radiologist never saw it...  Well in less then two years we have a
settlement but I still have stage IV BC!
So much for going annually for mammographies and never ever missing a
beat!!

I would like to persuade all the folks out there in cyberspace to be
adamant and insist on more testing or scans if they feel in any way that
there is something NOT kosher!

I am not settled in Florida where the oncologist has found that I am
hormone positive, something that I was never told in NY.  I am now on
arimidex and my markers seem to be going downward.  I have BC with meds
to the liver.

Friends insist that NYC is the way to go for treatment, but I disagree
as I am so disillusioned….

I know this sounds nuts, but I have never felt healthier???

The Determinedly-Dumbed-Down Docs, & Mammograms:  No Trust Left

I trusted the local hospital (ETMC) to do my mammograms, & it proved a
huge mistake.

ETMC has their "regular" radiologist read the mammograms & do
ultrasounds, ... & every single year, he missed the fact that the lumps
(esp. the large rapidly-growing one) were cancer.

Plus, the other doctors & surgeons insisted the lumps were fine, & were
definitely not cancer.

I now know that it's Very important to have a specially-trained
breast-cancer radiologist there when the mammos & ultrasound are done,
.. & to have them review the films immediately & order more if
necessary.

I wish I'd known this sooner.

----------------

NOT East Texas

In East Texas, most medical testing & care have proved very
sub-standard, the worst.

I couldn't find a Breast Care Center with a specially-trained
breast-cancer radiologist, until I went to Methodist Hosp. in Houston.

[I definitely do Not recommend the Baylor breast surgeon AL at
Methodist, ... & have about half of a large butchered breast left, as
reminder of why he's Not good at doing mastectomies).

Texas is definitely Not the place to seek competent or quality medical
care, ... because of the lack of govt standards & controls over the
doctors and industry, ... & because of the bad laws which prevent us
from prosecuting & suing them for wrongdoing.

------------

LSU:  For Mammograms Only

LSU in Shreveport Louisiana did do good mammograms, so I started going
there.

However, I do Not recommend their Breast Surgery Dept., or most other
depts there.

[And you have to be very careful when you go there, due to the high
crime rates in that area, & due to the lack of any controls over their
doctors & students.  It's also another state with bad laws, where you
can't sue the docs for wrongdoing.]

[I've heard (???) they have a good ER, if you are stabbed,
seriously-injured in a car wreck, etc., & need some basic stuff done,
.. but that it's important to transfer out to another hospital
(immediately after being treated), due to safety concerns.

I know from experience that their ER is no good, for anything other than
the most serious of injuries.  My multiple spine injuries, head & neck
injuries, & strokes, were definitely Not their thing, & I got no help or
good referral.]

------------

Hospitals:  One Good Thing or None

Each hospital or facility, seems to have one good thing in it (such as
mammograms), & nothing else of value.  ???

So far, I know of no good place in Texas, to get breast surgery.

PS   Bad Experiences

At LSU I almost fainted from shock, when a student doctor (a resident
who was in charge, & was training the other students in breast surgery)
picked up a "dirty/used" pair of scissors that were lying on a table, &
started to cut out my stitches.  She did not wash her hands or wear
gloves.

I repeatedly asked her to stop, but she wouldn't listen.  Thank
goodness, there were only one or two loose stitches to cut.

---------------

Seeking medical care in the East Texas, West Louisiana area, ... has
repeatedly proved a horrifying experience.

---------------

One of the main problems with health care in the US now, seems to be the
insurance companies control over it, ... & they are shutting it down.
