Today, my best friend underwent a total mastectomy with (expander
type) reconstructive surgery combined.  She had 1 of 3 sentinel lymph
nodes with 1 cm lesion, other 2 appeared clear.  They removed another
14 or so for full laboratory pathology (won't hear until Friday).
This sound familiar to anyone?  She asked me to do some research for
her tonight (she's having internet withdrawal symptoms!)  I read on a
site where anything under 2 cm was considered "no lymph node
involvement."    How does this sound to you all?  Any information or
opinions would be helpful!

Hi: So sorry about your friend and what she's going through; and the waiting
for results is sooooo hard. No, you are confused about tumor size and lymph
node involvement; there is no specific correlation. There can be lymph node
involvement with a small lesion and NO lymph node involvement with one the
size of a baseball; it has to do with the nature of the cells, the "type" of
cancer. The tumor has a nuclear grade and is staged as part of treatment
protocol. No, I'm no doctor, but too overdosed on the Internet. She will
need to get the pathology report. I am glad only one node seems to have been
involved, but the critical thing will be determining what type of cells
comprise the lesions.

Take care of her!
